Owner description: Dumbo, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It encompasses two sections: one located between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, which connect Brooklyn to Manhattan across the East River, and another that continues east from the Manhattan Bridge to the Vinegar Hill area.

Go on over to Dumbo, take a walk around its streets and in its shops, visit the happening Gallery Building, and have a light meal at AlMar.

I remember when DUMBO was just a collection of burnt out warehouses. Local musicians would pull up to the empty loading docks, unload their little bits of equipment, and put on shows. There wasn’t anywhere to eat back then..it was BYOB, mostly. WIth the restoration of the area, and the acronym DUMBO firmly entrenched in NYC neighborhood lingo, the nabe is quite chic--and overpriced. But the views remain compelling and Brooklyn Bridge Park is a favorite spot to scope out the Manhattan skyline and experience the majesty of the both the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges (and the accompanying noise and traffic as well).

We stopped in a children's clothing store and ask the sales person where we could find some good food. She recommended 'Super Fine.' We had very good food and it was a very diverse group of people. We loved it.

The tour group was large and it was quite a long tour on a hot day, but worth the effort. Our guide (Geoff) worked hard to make it memorable and informative and he knew his stuff. He is a bit actor and kept breaking into song which you may or may not enjoy but we appreciated his commitment and professionalism. We walked the bridge which is undergoing extensive renovation and ended up in DUMBO where we had our only good coffee in NYC (a city where, for the most part, quantity reigns over quality). At the end of the tour, you end up pretty stranded and on the other side of NYC so we took the hop-on hop-off ferry which gave us lots of choices of where to go next.

Walk around the area around Manhattan Bridge where most of the buildings are converted warehouses, the streets are cobblestone and the vibe is cool. Have several destinations in mind to visit (Galapagos, Jacques Torres Chocolate Shop, Powerhouse Books, etc.) as the area can seem devoid of any clear place to go on an weekday.
