The Red Hook Lobster Pound is a phenomenon. Some of the best lobster rolls (a bargain at $16 in 2011) and whole cooked lobster dinners ($25) are available in very plain surroundings in Red Hook, Brooklyn. In the left side of the building is the pound, where you order your dinner. The food is marvelous, because the owners get direct shipments of lobster from Maine. The lobster roll held a good portion of large lobster chunks. You can have it with either a light mayo sauce, or with butter. The food was wonderful. After you get your food, you take it next door to what could be described as looking like a garage with large picnic tables. If you are looking for ambiance, this is very basic. The Red Hook Lobster Pound is similar to a roadside lobster shack in Maine. There is such a place in Cape Elizabeth ME, with a wonderful view right on the ocean. The Red Hook Lobster Pound has no view whatsoever, but their lobster rolls are better than the ones in Cape Elizabeth. In warmer months the RHLP has a food truck which brings the lobster to various other parts of the city. We havn't tried the truck.
To get to the Red Hook Lobster Pound, you can take the B61 bus from downtown Brooklyn, or you could take the water taxi from Pier 11, Manhattan to the Red-Hook-IKEA pier, and then walk a bit. Besides IKEA, Red Hook has Fairway, coffee houses, other restaurants, and Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies which we also reviewed.
