Choose a clear night/evening without raining or snowing and visit in December the streets in Dyker Heights.
The houses are illuminated like in the movies.

Having lived in neighboring Bay Ridge, I can truly say Dyker Heights is a great neighborhood in Brooklyn. Despite it being situated in between the neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Borough Park, and Sunset Park, the D and N subway trains, and the BQE and Belt Parkway, the neighborhood feels self-contained, safe to walk across, and the housing stock seems better kept up than in the other neighborhoods listed. For those looking to experience Italian Brooklyn, this is by the census count the most heavily Italian neighborhood in the borough. Neighboring Bensonhurst is better known for that and advertises that more with 18th avenue and more pizzerias but Dyker Heights is actually larger percentage wise. There are few apartment buildings here too which give the neighborhood a more authentic feel as well. During Christmas time, this is the best neighborhood to see in NYC due to the excellent decorations more so than any other neighborhood in the city. From a tourist standpoint, one can easily miss this neighborhood as they may confuse it for Bay Ridge or Bensonhurst, it is the area that is between 14th Avenue and the BQE for those seeking clarification. One should consider visiting it mainly if they are interested in exploring this part of Brooklyn. As someone who lived near here, I'd recommend buying here but I realize it may not have the appeal that the neighborhoods closer to or in Manhattan have.

Nice neighborhood all year round..some beautiful homes..however during Christmas season the neighbors seem to compete for attention with their lavish lightings..a must see....some streets get traffic jams and lots of pedestrian traffic..

The area hasn't changed much since I grew up there in the 50's and early 60's.....it is still predominantly Italian which affords you plenty of opportunities to sample some great Italian cuisine....It is a safe area and if you are there during Christmas season you are in for a great...There are some incredibly expansive and novel lighted Displays such as lifesize ice skaters...Look around 11th ave and the 80's or just follow the line of cars

We strolled around on our own one night between Christmas and new years eve after reading some suggestions and it was awesome! As a newcomer to the united states I thought last year's Christmas in California was great, but this exceeded it by far. It's just crazy what people make of their homes for Christmas! The main streets to see are between 11th and 13th Ave and 83rd to 86th st. We felt very safe walking around, even in the smaller streets back to the subway station on 18th Ave. It was so cold, I would suggest taking the Thermo bottle with you on top of all the cloths, and some hot drinks.
