The Blue Porch Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #11 of 58 Brooklyn B&B and Inns
Reviewed May 10, 2012

I can't imagine wanting more from a B&B than my wife and I got at the Blue Porch. Hosts Paul and Trudi were friendly and helpful, and anticipated our every need. The breakfasts were very good, the room (the Octagon) was spacious, the bed comfortable. The location in a very nice neighborhood three short blocks from the Q line was convenient to all our destinations, and there were more than enough good cafes and restaurants within walking distance. We've been to quite a few B&Bs over the decades, but none were better than the Blue Porch.

The warm and generous hospitality of Paul and Trudy (not to mention the fabulous breakfasts!) was the best feature of this outstanding New York bed and breakfast secret. Furthermore, they were exceeding helpful with issues regarding transport, dinner dining and tourist destinations. When I caught a cold, they went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that I had all that I needed to enable me to continue at our frenetic pace. My daughter even received helpful instrumental tips to utilise in her music lessons on our return home...Valentyna

Wonderful place to stay! Hospitality, location, food, atmosphere, accommodations - all spectacular. Couldn't have asked for more in a B&B. We will absolutely return.

Our recent weekend stay at the Blue Porch Bed and Breakfast was everything we'd envisioned and much, much more. Since our grandson was born a year ago, we like to sample B & B's near our daughter and son-in-law's Prospect Park, Brooklyn-area apartment when we go to visit. You couldn't ask for more comfortable and relaxing accommodations than Trudy and Paul provide in their spacious and lovely historic Victorian home. Every detail is taken care of in order to make your stay a memorable and pleasant experience. We enjoyed meeting our hosts and sharing both good conversation and delicious, home-baked breads and muffins with fresh fruit, juice, good coffee, cheeses and other delicacies each morning, along with the New York Times and wonderful music. Trudy and Paul treated us like family, welcoming our grandson and his parents in for a glimpse of their home, as well. This is true hospitality, with no effort spared for our comfort, and we will definitely plan a return visit.

I usually shy away from B&Bs, preferring the anonymity and privacy of hotels. But we decided to give the Blue Porch a chance, given that we wanted to experience Brooklyn from up close and stay away from Manhattan. The Blue Porch came highly recommended by friends and was ranked #1 on Tripadvisor and so we booked. We never once regretted our decision. From the moment we entered their home until we left, Paul and Trudy were the most helpful and charming hosts we could have hoped for. Thank you Trudy for the wonderful home baked breakfasts and Paul for your help in planning our stay. The room (large by NYC standards) was very comfortable and warm, as was the bathroom. We will definitely be back and loved getting to know you both a little and discover your Brooklyn neighbourhood.

Our week long stay in Brooklyn for our son's wedding was made even more special by the warm hospitality of Paul and Trudy. Being our first bed and breakfast experience, we cannot make comparisons but also cannot imagine a better time could be had anywhere else. From the comfortable room to the fantastic and even exotic (one was Turkish!) breakfasts to the true kindness of invitiing our son and his wife join us for our last breakfast, our stay was just wonderful! We highly recommend the Blue Porch as a lovely home away from home.

The Blue Porch will impress the most seasoned B&B enthusiasts, and it may even convert some hotel loyalists. It is hard to extol the BP's virtues without bringing attention to its two knowledgeable and humble proprietors, Paul and Trudy. These folks are really what make the little cosy blue cottage a home.

From the moment you arrive, you are greeted with such warmth that you may feel like you've known the affable couple forever. Enter the well-appointed rooms, and you will find chocolates and water to make your stay just a tad more comfortable. Once you are settled in, expect the native New Yorkers to lavish you with information on attractions, weather, transportation and anything else you need. Their attention to detail is amazing- once they knew we were from Singapore, they printed the weather chart for us in celsius instead of fahrenheit. Trudy even asked us what kind of milk we'd like with our drinks, and took the extra effort to purchase the 2 percent and Half-and-Half that we preferred. This brings me to breakfast. I'm not a morning person, and typically skip breakfasts in favour of more sleep. However, at the Blue Porch, I was truly torn between lingering in the cosy warm bed and waking up to enjoy the spectacular continental breakfast. I'm glad I woke up for breakfast every morning, because I would have hated to miss the home-baked goodies and array of fruits which were presented like Harry Winston gems on fine porcelain. As if Paul and Trudy needed to gild the lily, they even played wonderful classical and jazz music to accentuate our experience. I felt like a countess in a castle. Really.

What was most memorable though, was the wonderful breakfast conversation. Paul and Trudy engaged us on every topic possible- politics, sociology, culture, travel, amongst other things. Their impeccable knowledge about the world, coupled with their humility, really endeared them to us. If I weren't just a sojourner, I imagine we would be fast friends.

On our last day, we were presented with a little surprise in the form of a children's book for our soon-to-be-born baby. They have invited us to return to the Blue Porch when the baby is born, and my husband and I would absolutely love to introduce our boy to this wonderful city and inspiring couple.

Room Tip: Ask for the larger room on the second floor with a large bathroom next to it.
