Description: Char No. 4 is a whiskey bar & restaurant inspired by a passion for bourbon. The name refers to the practice of aging bourbon in charred new oak barrels, which gives bourbon its characteristic sweet, caramelized flavors and its beautiful amber hue. Char No. 4 features over 150 American whiskeys and serves a menu of American fare with a focus on smoked meat. The American whiskeys are augmented by an extensive list of whiskeys from Europe and beyond as well as a selection of all-bourbon cocktails. Char No. 4 is located in a 19th century row house in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. The design environment takes inspiration from this tradition in its treatment of light, its use of color, and in its nod to the form and construction of whiskey barrels both within the water-jet cut pattern of the steel facade, and in custom designed light fixtures. A field of large cylindrical pendants suffuse the space with a tawny glow that sets a mood of sophisticated conviviality for both drinking and dining.

“Great for Brunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

I had the pancakes and was very pleased with the unique butter and berry combo. It was also a very large portion that could easily be shared with someone else. I also ordered a side of the home fries (potatoes) and got a side of their house made hot sauce which was also very tasty. This is coming from someone who LOVES spicy food and puts spice on almost everything. I would highly recommend this place for brunch if in the area. Nice collection of whiskeys too!

“Haven on a rainy night in Brooklyn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

Caught in a sudden October downpour, we arrived dripping at this narrow atmospheric restaurant a few blocks from the Brooklyn Bridge with only a vague notion of what to expect but grateful to be shown at once to a table. In addition to the extensive Bourbon list (one oz shots as little as $3.00) we found an interesting menu, not all steak as we had feared, but inventive pork, chicken and other dishes. Our opening salad of crisp greens, hazelnuts, goat cheese and plums is one we will attempt to recreate at home. Smoked chicken with parsnips and grilled fennel was delicious. My companion pronounced the baked beans which accompanied his pork sandwich, "the best ever". Other reviewers mention the home made ice cream -- with bourbon. Our advice: have it! Service was friendly and competent, and atmosphere very congenial.

“Delicious Dinner”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2012

Arrived with 3 other friends on a Friday night, we were sat almost immediately in the back section - secluded and quiet. Everything the table ordered was delicious - crab cake, hangar steak, lamb sausage. The Bourbon Butter Pecan Ice Cream is simply sinful. I don't think I've seen a larger Bourbon list. And even this non-drinker of Bourbon found the Manhattan very tasty.

I would definitely suggest you give Char #4 a try! And an easy side trip out of Manhattan for the tourists.

“Excellent bourbon list and the food is great too”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

Having done the bourbon trail last year, we were impressed by the array of bourbons on the back wall of the bar at Char No. 4. The list of house cocktails in imaginative, but the array of bourbon choices is just staggering.
The food was very good and the portion sizes were just right. The wait staff were attentive and knowledgeable. We will definitely return.
