Most visitors go to the Metropolitan museum and miss out on this one. Don't! It is a great museum with excellent collections. Especially the egyptological collection is great. Actually, in many ways complementary to the collection found at the Metropolitan Museum. Great design of this more than hundred year old museum. Unfortunately, in my view, the entrance was ruined a couple of years ago when the new entrance was constructed. Other than that, I can strongly recommend a visit to this great museum. Transportation is very convenient. Just take the subway to the Eastern Parkway stop and you'll be just next to the museum. Furthermore, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens is just a few hundred meters away. Great place to visit in the spring or summer.

Went to art school here. It grew over forty years to a wonderful collection. The egyptian tombs and artifacts are world class. The exterior building recently built has cool fountains, great shops.

My favorite exhibit in the Brooklyn Museum is Judy Chicago's Dinner Party. It's a gigantic triangular table with place settings for women leaders and innovators from the Primeval Goddess to Natalie Barney to Sojourner Truth. Each place setting celebrates each woman in traditionally female arts: fabric art for the cloth, pottery for the dinnerware. Many women came together in the 70s as volunteers to bring Chicago's vision to fruition. So controversial at its creation, the work was praised as innovative and visionary and reviled as irrelevant and shallow. The work came out of the turbulence of the Second Wave of Feminism bringing women out of secondary and hidden roles to the forefront. This period is widely regarded as the impetus for today's expanded roles for women in leadership, medicine, and other professions, so recently almost entirely male.
Other exhibits pale in comparison in my view, but there are many excellent exhibits dating from prehistoric to modern times. Admission is very reasonable.

The permanent collection as well as the special exhibits are well worth it. A trip to Prospect Park which is right next door and the Botanical Gardens is a must also, but on separate days, because there is so much to see in the Museum. You really need time to enjoy the museum.

The Brooklyn Museum is a local gem. The Native American exhibits are wonderful. The special exhibits have always been great as well. It is next door to the main branch of the Brooklyn Library in Grand Army Plaza. That, too, is an interesting building to visit. The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and Prospect Park are also right there. This area is full of great places to see.
