“Great inn, location and value in brownstone Brooklyn”
Reviewed November 20, 2010

Beautiful brownstone; friendly, helpful hosts; clean, comfortable rooms; great beds; refrig and microwave; safe, quiet residential street in Prospect Heights; near subways, Prospect Park, and Park Slope; walking distance to many restaurants and shopping. We have stayed here more than 5 times and will continue to stay when we visit family. And will always refer friends. Short subway ride to Manhattan too.

The Sofia Inn is located in a renovated turn of the century brownstone near Prospect Park in Brooklyn. I stayed there with my 12 year old son. We loved the homey atmosphere and the abilitiy to walk only a few blocks and find ourselves at' The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn library, Prospect Park, the Botanical gardens, lots of eateries, and several subway stops which took us to Manhattan within a few stops. The staff were friendly and ehlpful, the rooms cozy, cool in the heat of summer, and well kept The kitchenette was a real plus. I'd recommend the Sofia Inn to anyone who would enjoy staying in an urban neighborhood in the heart of Brooklyn. I had a great time exploring the neighborhood.

The Inn is in a wonderful area of Brooklyn, but I felt the security and overall comfort was not so wonderful. The suite I occupied had a simple gate latch on the sliding front door. And there was another door to the back that seemed insecure. I didn't want Fort Knox, but I would have liked a door latch that felt secure. The entire suite was painted in dark red, and most of the lamps had small wattage bulbs which made it hard to see. The bathroom shower had a moldy smell, and the hot water heater was not working one of the three days I was there. And there was no place in the bathroom to set anything, and no hook on the bathroom door for a robe.

We chose the Sofia Inn because of its location in Brooklyn. It is close to the subway, restaurants, shopping and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. We stayed in the Parlor Suite, which was filled with charming antiques and the woodwork was beautiful. However, we are used to renovated spaces with modern conveniences. Although the Parlor Suite was large and had a kitchen/dining area, the bathroom was quite small and was in desperate need of repair. The bathroom exhaust fan was barely functioning, which probably contributed to the musty smell in the entire suite along with flies and spiders in the bathroom and ants crawling on the floor near the bed. The mattress and pillows need to be replaced. We have no complaints with the owner, Billy, or his cleaning lady, Celeste; they were both very kind and attentive.

We wanted to be near our grandchild on this trip ,rather than in Manhattan, and the Sofia Inn fit the bill perfectly. The street is very friendly and safe, and we only had to walk 2 blocks to get anywhere we wanted to go. Tom's Restaurant is right around the corner (our favorite breakfast place in Brooklyn or New York City, for that matter). There was a coffee maker in the room at the Inn, but not much in the way of condiments (bring your own Splenda and half and half - there is a fridge). We stayed in the East Room on the second floor. My only complaints about an otherwise very nice room were the hard bed and the lack of shades on the windows. I guess I should have known by the orientation of the room that the light would be coming in early in the morning. We were awakened at 4:30 am by sunlight and kept up at night by the streetlights. Bring a sleep mask if you book the East or North rooms. The bathroom was very clean and a hair dryer was provided. An iron was also available. We will probably stay here again. The manager was very pleasant and easy to deal with. If you make a deposit with Paypal, you will be charged a convenience fee. I was glad I took a check along as payment of the balance was by check or cash only.

This was our second stay and we enjoyed ourselves even more! This is an ideal spot for my husband and I to stay while visiting our son and girlfriend. Prospect Park is lovely and Tom's Restaurant is a great place as well. Thanks to Billy for giving us such good advice. Certain we'll return again.

We loved this place. We visited our daughter and her newborn and the sofia inn was convenient and comfortable and very hospitable. Clean and friendly and at a very good price. We stayed in the east room—roomy with a refrigerator (free beer and coffee!), and a microwave, a sitting area in front of the TV. Perfect for the holidays. Nice. This is an old house in a beautiful section of Brooklyn—quiet yet with restaurants and shops and metro stations nearby. We felt very safe. The owner was friendly. And we ate at two great restaurants in the neighborhood, Beast and the Joyce Café. You hear all sorts of things about New York, but we felt at home here as soon as I arrived.
