Thank goodness this place is back up and running. Coney Island is a multi-time per year pilgrimage. True Americana. Like highway 66 all New York'ed out and smacked right next to the ocean. Take a day to stroll down the boardwalk, grab a hot dog and chili cheese fries from Nathan's, dip your toes in the ocean and soak up a true NYC experience. Do all that and more before heading to get your head whipped around by the cyclone rollercoaster (not for the weak of heart), I'm a huge fan of Lola's shop and even though they don't have 'shoot the freak' anymore there are great little stops and sights to see.
I don't have a family myself but locals bring their kids and walk by other locals who are just out to sun, drink, and hangout. Don't go there strictly for the beach. Go there for the atmosphere, and to think about how it must have been, and how glorious of a vibe you get there now.
Conveniently located at the end of the F and several other trains, if you're in BK and have never gone then go. If you're visiting friends in BK and have already seen Manhattan then you must carve out a day to head on over in the warmer months.
I feel when people visit NYC they are looking for quintessential experiences. Well folks, this is it.
The amusement park is hilarious and actually has some decent rides. Not many bumper car rides are playing a consistent assortment of the Notorious BIG's greatest hits. They have the freak show which I hope always remains.
