“Perfect lodge experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2013

Taste of Alaska is an excellent place to stay as well as to observe the aurora when there is high activity. The one issue is that their northern horizon is blocked significantly. However, it is all the other amenities that make up for any possible short coming. Each room has 2 double beds, radiant floor heating, TV (if you really want to use it), and free wifi. Their are sliding doors that let you out to watch aurora. Even when there is a lot of snow there is plenty of territory to walk about. Sometimes you can see moose.

There are 3 buildings. We stayed in the main building in room 1 for 2 nights. Breakfast and dinner were first class. It is all due to the care and attention by the owners who go out of their way to make every guest feel special. After sunrise you can see Mt. McKinley off in the distance on a clear day. Sweeping views to the east and south. The sky at night, when clear, is quite excellent for night viewing. They also have a sauna. Plenty of hot water and the room temperature is consistent.

It takes about 30 minutes to get here from the center of town but the trip is worth it. The decor is quirky antique. Even if you decide just to hang out the relaxing experience is well worth it.

Room Tip: I think any room would be good.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this B&B for all 4 nights we were in Fairbanks. We chose it based on its many excellent reviews, the prime aurora-viewing location, and the option to enjoy a freshly cooked dinner in the main dining room if we didn't want to venture into downtown (an option we never ended up using) -- we were not disappointed.

The service Kory provided was outstanding, particularly in light of the B&B being essentially a one-man operation. We had unusual dietary needs at breakfast, which he consistently and cheerfully accommodated, and we were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a gigantic suite for half of our stay at no extra charge. The rooms were kept very clean and everything worked as it should have. Kory also gave us some helpful tips on cellular dead-zone troubleshooting, local attractions, and aurora-watching, and was always very friendly and eager to please.

Of the four nights we were there, we saw the aurora twice -- one night only very faintly at around 2:30am, and the next night much more clearly and brightly almost at the stroke of midnight. The property is beyond the reach of the light pollution from downtown, which is a great help -- even despite the presence of a few clouds, the aurora was still visible. Lawn chairs were thoughtfully placed on the grounds for people staying at the main lodge to use in the spots most comfortable for them. The room where we stayed for the first half of our visit had its own private viewing porch and chairs.

Even though the lodge was outside of the downtown area, it was still within a relatively short drive of all the places we wanted to see (having a car there was essential) -- downtown, U of Fairbanks LARS, Mary Shields, Running Reindeer Ranch, and even North Pole.

The outside of the property during the day was a particular delight, with beautiful flowers and shrubbery planted throughout and a nicely kept lawn.

The only reason I didn't give the lodge 5 stars is because the interior décor and choice of knickknacks weren't really my cup of tea. However, that was the least important factor -- everything else was great and I would recommend this B&B without hesitation.

We stayed at the lodge for 4 nights in September and it was truly a pleasure. The accommodations were spacious (we stayed in the Annex) and the views from the lodge and cabins were lovely. The weather was not particularly fabulous during our entire vacation, but we were lucky enough to see the northern lights! Note to self...research the type of camera you need BEFORE arriving if you want to capture the beauty in a picture! But what made our stay extra special was the staff (Cory in particular, as he was the one we saw most). Over breakfast (which was quite tasty), Cory would listen to the various groups, ask about the prior day's activities and current day plans and give whatever advice he could. When our camera and "operators" failed to capture the aurora, my husband was ready to go to town and purchase a tripod. When he asked Cory where he should go, he was presented with a spare tripod that we could use as long as we wanted. He also offered towels for the hot springs, as they charge 5 bucks a pop. On our last day there, we told him we were interested in a hike, so he recommended Angel Rocks (a fabulous hike, by the way). While we were finishing up breakfast, he went to his table (unsolicited) and printed off a map and information on the trail (such a nice touch!). He was always very informative and made great recommendations. The icing on the cake was our daily visit with Dawson, their new pup, very sweet and well behaved. You will really feel like family at this charming lodge!

We had the pleasure of staying at the taste of Alaska lodge in August. We rented the Annex room which is a short walk from the main lodge and has the feeling of being in a cabin in the forest. In fact one day while sitting at the window catching up on some correspondence, I saw a moose cow and calf trot by my window! Quick double-take on my part, and a short time later my phone rang. It was the owner telling me a moose was on the property if I hadn't noticed it.

Kory the owner, cooked up a great breakfast every morning and was helpful, and laid back. His daddy Dave told us stories of growing up in the area when he wasn't panning for gold. They made us feel like members of the family.

The only issues were that us city folks were used to a sleep number bed, and the bed was on the hard side for us, but that may be part of the experience, lol. The other thing was the plumbing in the annex needs some work, leaking toilet, slow moving drain in the tub, but nothing that would cause me to not recommend the lodge.

My fiance and I stayed at A Taste of Alaska Lodge for a little over a week and have nothing but great things to say about it. Breakfasts were delicious and the room was comfortable with a private entrance. Although it was unusually hot during our stay, we were comfortable because of the ability to leave our screen door open (for city folks, it was a lesson in trust) and were provided a box fan in case it was still too hot. The view from our room and the dining room was amazing. It was an incredibly relaxing trip thanks to the owner of the lodge. We never felt out of place and we are glad to have stayed at ATOAL!

This place was great! We had a great view out of our room. The owner was very laid back and accomadating to our needs. He provided an excellent breakfast in the morning and it really felt like Alaska. When we return to Fairbanks we will definitely stay here again!

Have stayed here many times. Always come up in March. This place is definitely unique. It’s about a 10-15 minute drive outside of Fairbanks. The owners (new and old) are always friendly and willing to help you out in any way. Look to book early as the place does not have a lot of rooms. The place is clean and very comfortable. We always stay in the main lodge on the lower level. Great access to the back field to watch for Northern Lights. Everyone always loves the breakfast, which is included, upstairs in the eating area. Kory the Cook/Owner does a nice job and will make a nice wife someday. Depending on your perspective the place has more antiques/junk that you care to look at, but at the least it is interesting and different. You’re in Alaska, why stay at a Hampton Inn, for a few bucks more it’s something you’ll remember. Give it a try and we’ll see you next March. One last thing, get that Hot Tub back in use, need it when it 20 below.

Room Tip: Lower level rooms make it easy to get in and out of the room.
