“$8 for some quick, rather unique fun.”
Reviewed June 16, 2012

How often will you ever get to experience -40? Better question: How often will you find something to do for $8 in Alaska? The "experience" is really just a large, walk-in freezer, but there's an ice throne to sit in, plus get your pic taken next to the giant thermometer reading -40 inside. Tossing a provided cup of hot water into the air and watching it instantly vaporize was fun. Suiting up in a giant parka with fur trim was also fun(I'm from the South, where such things are only seen on tv). One tip: if you want to stay in a while, don't be in the fan blast, it's so cold it will hurt after a few moments!

It is free, but they sell a picture. It was very nice and Nina made sure we got a good picture.

“LOL Burrrr”
Reviewed December 14, 2011

Steamboat Landing gift shop Way in the back - If you can find it -is this little shack /box -up a couple of steps -you walk into the first room and it is cool but hey it is Aug and it feels ok -it feels like 32degrees -maybe freezing -two doors open off of this room on the right and the left;-you pick one it is 40 degrees below zero and from the window looking out the girl snaps an $8.00 picture -you are then supposed to come out and wait for the pic and decide it you want to buy it -I however did not understand the instructions and went into the OTHER 40 degree room and tried to stay longer than the other 40 degree room. the girl took another picture of me. I thought the second room was colder. I came out very frozen to them laughing that no one had ever done both rooms on the same visit, ah WHAT ? you were only supposed to go in one room ?. I so crack myself up -we were all laughing -turns out the first room had a lot of fog moisture from the guy b4 me and the pic did not come out -but the second room was a perfect picture! it is a touristy fun thing to do. and you dont have to buy the pic

“BRRRRR - Join the 40 below Club!!!!!”
Reviewed September 23, 2011

Inside the Steamboat Landing Gift Shop at the Riverboat Discovery Tour area, there is a room where the temperature is 40 below. You can go in and stay as long as you want (Ha-Ha!!!)
It is free and they will snap your picture for you as proof that you did it...Total novelty, but fun to do.....Get a t-shirt with 40 below club on it....and your picture!!!!! (The pic costs $8 and the t-shirt $9.99) reasonable price.....
