We expected to see lots of mitigatory birds but there were only a few in the pond. This was just a huge field (about the size of a football stadium) and there were no birds on the day we went.

Very nice system of trails right in the middle of town. In the winter the trails are groomed for use by ski or dog sled. Great place for birding both in the fields with the geese and cranes and in the forest for other birds. Annual Sandhill Crane Festival in August.

I ended up going here when they were having a festival - it was freezing, but the refuge was really nice and had some great walking trails. I would definately go back.

Started with a "too bad you weren't here last week for the Sandhill Cranes" but after that we got good direction and enjoyed quite a lovely walk in the autumn woods. We did see the cranes - just not big fields full of them. An interesting way to spend part of a day and a great way to unwind after a flight.

I enjoyed visiting the Waterfowl Refuge. We didn't go to the visitor's building, as we stopped after hours and only stayed a few minutes, but I enjoyed seeing the birds so closely. We saw all kinds of birds and I believe there were easily thousands within view. A nice stop.
