I would HIGHLY recommend The Aurora Chasers tour to see the Northern Lights. This wife and hubby duo are amazing and will definitely teach you the ins-and-outs of the Aurora Borealis. Ronn and Marketa are both amazing! :)
What to expect: they will come pick you up from your hotel in their van, teach you what the Northern Lights are (and how they happen), help you setup your camera, get you setup to take amazing pictures when you're on the ground, and they'll get you a great cup of hot cocoa to top it all off!
You shouldn't see the Northern Lights any other way!
I went out with Ronn and Marketa in late September and unfortunately it was a cloudy night and we did not see the lights. They told me I could go again for no additional charge if there were openings within 30 days since we did not see the lights. I took them up on their generous offer and came back about 10 days later for the night of my life! They are so knowledgeable about the proper camera settings and best places to go to capture the best of the aurora borealis. It is a night I'll never forget!
I was nervous watching the aurora forecast being so low for the night we booked with the Aurora Chasers, but Ronn and Marketa can find them. A photography lesson on the way out to understand the best camera settings for shooting the auroras and a science lesson on the way back to understand what you saw. Brilliant.
Took my new skills (and free Aurora Chasers thermos mug) out the next and next nights to shoot more auroras!!
The Aurora Chasers have an amazingly informative website for understanding Aurora activity. And make sure you follow all their advice re gear.
Got lots of amazing photos, can't wait to come back
Ronn and Marketa are very knowledgeable about the Aurora, what causes it, the best times to see it and the best areas around interior Alaska to capture it! They will walk you through step by step how to set up your camera so you can get beautiful pictures of the Aurora yourself! The tour was very accommodating; big clean comfortable bus, flat screen TV, and even hot chocolate with take home novelty mugs! Above and beyond my expectations.
Ronn & Marketa were amazing. We chose to rent the full kit from them and they made it so easy. Ronn responded quickly to all my questions/emails. They picked us up promptly from our hotel. We were a group of 7 and they gave each individual the time needed to make sure our adventure was awesome and the pictures we got were perfect. We were very fortunate to have a couple hours of beautiful lights to watch and photograph. We were in Alaska for two weeks and this was by far our most favorite event.
If only all tour operators and guides were as passionate about what they do and concerned about their customers as Ronn and Marketa of Aurora Chasers are. Knowing how hit-and-miss seeing the Aurora can be, we booked three nights with them. Before we arrived in Fairbanks, I knew we had found something special. Ronn quickly responded to each of my questions and steered me to the proper lens for my Nikon. The week that we were in Fairbanks had to have been a nightmare for Ronn and Marketa. It was raining when they picked us up each evening. In order to see the Aurora, we were forced to drive almost three hours north to get out from under the cloud cover. The first night, they were able to find some windows in the clouds. We were able to get some photos, but the windows closed very quickly. The second night Marketa spotted some very active Aurora between the clouds and the horizon. Ronn was determined to find the perfect spot and overcame some nasty, low hanging fog to do so. His persistence paid off. We were eleven, very happy “campers”. It was amazing to watch both Ronn and Marketa move from person to person, checking to make sure everyone was satisfied. Marketa took some wonderful portraits of each of us and Ronn provided photography consultation and problem solving. Without his help, our photos and trip might have been ruined. In addition, Ronn (also) deserves a shout-out for his ability to navigate some sloppy and slick unpaved Alaskan highways. We got home safely at 6:30 a.m., and each time were thrilled with our adventure, knowing that Ronn and Marketa had done everything in their power to ensure that we saw and experienced the Lights.
