Sophie Station Suites

Reviewed February 27, 2013

I stayed at the Sophie Station recently as part of a pre-cruisetour group via Royal Caribbean cruise lines. Overall, it was a pleasant stay and we had no real issues.

The property itself is obviously an older hotel, but is in great shape. The grounds are nice and they have some really beautiful landscaping. It is very convenient to the airport and to a commercial area with a grocery store, drug store, gas stations and multiple dining options. Sophie Station has their own restaurant on property named Zach's and we ate there for breakfast one day and dinner another . Both meals were better than we expected. Like all dining in Alaska, the food was expensive. Dinner was definitely the better of the two meals. You can find much cheaper options for a decent breakfast within walking distance.

The room was in great shape but it was pretty outdated. It does have a flat screen TV. if you are staying in the summer, there is a window style air conditioner but it only cools the one room. They provide a box fan to help circulate the air throughout the rest of the room. We didn't get a room with a King bed but had two Queens or Twins (I believe they said Queen but they seemed pretty small). The mattresses were terrible and it made for a very rough two nights sleep. I know mattresses can be expensive but its not something that a hotel should take the cheapest option on. The rooms do have a full kitchen in them, with basic utensils and pots, pans..etc. If you were going to have an extended stay in the area I would definitely recommend Sophie Station because of the kitchen and the close proximity to the grocery store (a couple of hundred yards away).

People were very nice and helpful with directions. They have a bus that takes you around to their sister properties if you are interested.

Again, a solid stay overall. I've also stayed at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Fairbanks and its a nicer property than Sophie Station, however it is not as convenient to groceries, restaurants and such.

Just celebrated my wife's birthday here, and she (and the whole family) loved it. Although the in-hotel restaurant Zach's is wonderful, we chose to cook king crab legs & ribeyes that we bought at Fred Meyer, right across the street. Having a full kitchen in your own room is great.
Our two kids loved the space, and enjoyed watching kiddie movies on the flat screen TV (we brought our portable DVD to hook up). And when the kids got sleepy, we just put them in the bedroom next door, where my wife and I proceeded to watch "Win Win!" (a wonderful, but relatively unknown movie by the way). This is another reason why having the suite style room is good, because we didn't have to worry about waking up the kids watching TV. It was -10 outside, but it was sure nice not to worry about the cold...car plugged in, room very warm, hot bath...nice!

We spent a cold November weekend (20 below) for our 25th anniversary and loved this place. The staff is super friendly and our room was more like a condo apt with full kitchen, living room with flat screen TV, bedroom with 2 queen beds and a large bathroom; all spotless and warm. Free paper every day. We had a great dinner in the lounge, served by Joe who we really liked. Best blue cheese dressing and desserts ( all home made) that we've had in a long time. I don't know how they are able to do all this for only $85 per night. We also got a 50% discount on our visit to the owners' Antique Car Museum which blew us away, it is that good and unexpected in a place like Fairbanks. A must see!

Spacious and gracious! Spacious living arrangements and gracious staff. We found the hotel to be more than we hoped for. Especially enjoyed having the morning paper delivered each morning and the fitness room was a nice amenity. Beds were heavenly!! Highly recommend!

We were part of a bus tour and they chose this place. The rooms were clean but very old. The service at the front desk was helpful.

It was nice to have some kitchen facilities to use for some meals.

It is a little far from Fairbanks, but they do have a shuttle.

Date of Stay: August 2012

Accommodations: The suites provide plenty of room, especially if you’re traveling with children, and offer a nice kitchen area equipped with a full size refrigerator, stove, microwave, a few pots and pans, dishes and utensils. There is a desk area, living room with sofa bed and television and sliders opening onto a balcony, and a separate bedroom with a television. Although the suite furnishings are somewhat dated, it’s more than made up for by the cleanliness, size and in-room conveniences.

Restaurant: Although we did not eat there during our stay, they have an on-site restaurant, Zach’s.

Staff: We cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff! They are definitely above and beyond helpful and pleasant and were always ready to offer suggestions! An awesome staff which helped to make our stay a great experience!

Transportation and Location: They offer a complimentary shuttle for the airport and train station as well as a complimentary around town Express. Conveniently located, and within a short walking distance, to grocery stores, shopping and restaurants.

Another nice perk offered are the free passes to the Auto Museum. Although it was not a planned visit, we were definitely glad we decided to check it out. Wow!! What a fabulous collection of autos and memorabilia.

I only ended up staying here one night, but it would be a great place to stay for a more extended vacation. The rooms were quite large, with a suite like feel, including kitchen area and seperate bedroom. The staff was friendly and the location was good. Grounds were nicely landscaped. They offer a wake-up call for the Aurora, they go out and check throughout the night.
