This was our first visit to Alaska and we had the good fortune of attending Fur Rondy and the start of the Iditarod before traveling to Fairbanks and attending mushing school. Once in Fairbanks we were honored to have the opportunity meet one of the mushing legends, Mary Shields, the first woman to complete the iditarod. She brought to life what it was like on the trail and freely answered all of our questions while making us feel very comfortable sitting at her kitchen table drinking coffee and eating cake. We were able to tour her kennel, meet and play with her huskies. We both fell in love with one special husky, Too Sweet, and wished we could have taken her home. It is not everyday you get to meet a true legend who exemplifies Alaskan life.
