“Most remote location I have been to”
Reviewed November 7, 2011

This lodge has the full works of a kitchen, and a full bathroom. The beds are comfortable and everything is kept in new condition. We had a very wonderful stay! If you are coming to Fairbanks, don't stay in a hotel. Stay here, all of the hotel guests who do northern lights tours end here at this lodge to sit in the viewing areas on the deck of the main cabin cause it sits on the highest point for optimal viewing.

The tours for hotel guests end at 1-2 AM, but if you stay here, you have it available to you all night long. Each room has Wilkie talkies to communicate with the main cabin if you notice the northern lights are out. It also allows you to communicate it to everyone else who is staying at the lodge.

When you stay here, the rooms have large windows and couches to view the lights from inside the cabin. The service from MOK the owner is well above and beyond any bed and breakfast I have been to. We will be back here when we come back to Alaska.

After staying at this place near Fairbanks, the rest of the resorts and lodges seemed to be "downgraded" tremendously. The reason I say this because Aurora Borealis Lodge feels like a 4.5 star HOME with the completeness of amenities (walkie talkie wakeup calls, red head lights, kitchen appliances, microwave, etc) and generous hospitality (Mok and his family were awesome!). The rooms had the best views you can get around Fairbanks and town.

Located near the Cleary Summit of Skiland, the lodge is easy to find and away from the light pollutions. The great and thoughtful architecture of the lodge allows its guests to view Northern Lights at the maximum from their rooms, from the common areas, and from the deck. You don't have to get up and get dressed before you enjoy the northern lights.

Unfortunately for the time I went it was cloudy. I didn't see any up in ABL. Later I went to Chena Hot Springs....did see the Northern lights, but their place is terrible to stay at. Next time I will just go to ABL and stay there for the whole trip!

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms are the best. Reserve ahead of time!

Mok was very welcoming. The location is outside of town and away from lights so the auroras showed up for us , they were amazing. The view is spectacular during the day as well as at night.

The service was very accommodating, professional, and thorough. Our room was extremely clean, comfortable, and well appointed. Every effort was made to make us comfortable and inform us of all the available amenities at the lodge and locally. The room was extremely well designed for viewing aurora and the beautiful countryside. The lodge itself is perfectly located for Alaska outdoor experiences, including ice-fishing, snow sports, and dog-sledding! The lodge is extremely attractive and well-built. Of the many things we liked, I think the room layout for aurora viewing and comfort of furnishings

Room Tip: Ask for the upper story.

I spent two nights at the ABL and couldn't have been happier with the experience. They didn't have room for the other two nights of my trip so I went to Chena Hot Springs (which was terrible-see my other review). I wish I could've spent the whole trip at ABL. Everything has been carefully thought out...right down to the walkie talkie wakeup calls. You can watch the aurora from inside your room..or go outside on the deck. The room and kitchen are beautifully equipped. There's nothing like cooking up a delicious breakfast and sipping your coffee (included) while looking out the picture windows at the Alaskan wilderness. I'll never forget it. If you go, make sure you stop at a supermarket first. There's no food at the lodge and the nearest restaurant is 20 minutes away. Mok and his family run a great place. Enjoy!

This is a good way to see the northern lights without having to join an expensive tour and stay up late at night waiting and waiting. The rules of the lodge are lights out at 1030pm so as to not create any light pollution for those watching for northern lights. This is a good time to catch up on a few zzzz's because Mok (the owner) will wake you up via walkie talkie if there is any activity in the sky (which didn't happen for us until about 230am). Activity was very light during our stay but I was glad we were able to catch a glimpse of it. I stayed up from 230am to about 4am watching the light glow fade in and out and move about the sky. It was very peaceful and surreal to watch. You can also use the walkie talkies to contact them. Should you need anything they will respond right away. Some highlights of the lodge: full kitchen, heated toilet seat, super comfy couch and beds, very good heating system, awesome views, super clean, free wifi, and the owners have a really cute dog you can play with :) They also provide snowshoes if you would like to take a stroll around the lodge. We were on a bottom floor room and could hear a lot of noise from the other rooms. Walls are thin. It didn't bother me too much, but if you are a light sleeper it should be taken into consideration. Also Mok is a little slow on email response. He will get back to you but be patient. The drive from downtown to the lodge took about half an hour. It is a little bit windy and icy. If you are used to those conditions it's probably not that bad... but being from California it was a bit scary for me. Mok provides good directions so we still made it ok. The lodge is run by Mok and his wife and they are both very friendly. Overall, it's a very cozy hideaway to stay at.
