Owner description: This unexpected gem at Wedgewood Resort features a remarkable collection of antique cars and historic fashions, plus entertaining displays on Alaska motoring history. With over 100 vintage outfits exhibited alongside automotive works of art, visitors are treated to a visually stunning trip back to a time when cars and fashion dominated the luxury goods market. The museum's automobile collection features over 85 American-made vehicles, including beautifully restored horseless carriages, nickel touring cars, rakish speedster, elegant classics, and early racecars. From rare marquees like Compound and Argonne to well-known names like Packard and Stutz, visitors will be amazed at the beauty, innovation, and history of these rolling masterpieces. All but a few of the automobiles are driven each summer, making this a true "living museum."Home to more than 600 textiles from the 18th to the Mid-20th Century, the museum presents one of the largest historic fashion collections on permanent display in the Western United States. The exhibits include enchanting examples of men's and women's fashions, from silk bustle dresses and motoring dusters to shimmering flapper shifts and dapper tuxedos. Antique accessories including historic hats, shoes, jewelry, and more complete the scores of vintage elegance. Historic photos and videos located throughout the galleries vividly illustrate the extreme circumstances faced by Alaska's pioneering motorists. Although dreadful road conditions and severe climate were unkind to their vehicles, some of these early cars survived and several are exhibited in the Alaska Gallery. These include the Territory's very first automobile, built in 1905 by a man who had never seen a car before! At the Sourdough Roadhouse, children and adults can don period clothing and climb aboard a 1911 automobile for photographs along the Old Valdez Trail.

Most cars are displayed so you can see them from several sides and appreciate the lines/details. Even the work/restore area is visible through large windows. This would be a 'must see' even if were in a major city.

My husband and I toured the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum in July 2010 during our two-month tour of Alaska. We own antique cars and have seen scores of antique car museums. Fountainhead Museum is by far the best antique car museum we've ever toured! It has a spectacular array of cars, but it also tells the history of automobiles in Alaska through posters and videos, and there is a wondeful display of vintage clothing. The curator and staff were gracious and educational as well.
We did not expect the excellence of this facility - way up in the extreme geography of Fairbanks, Alaska! Go see the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum - it's GREAT!!!!!

This year-old museum is a real find and a unique attraction in such a far-away place as Fairbanks, with its dazzling display of 60 or more fine vehicles, (many looking like new, and most in running condition,) colorful period clothing and beautifully enlarged photographs. The uncluttered setting shows off the collections to good advantage, and the descriptions reveal decades of American automotive (and fashion) history in a very entertaining manner. Staff are helpful and well-informed, too. This is no afterthought of how to show someone's favorite cars, but a world-class, professionally organized museum that would be of interest to anyone with an ounce of curiousity. This is an amazing surprise in such a location, and a must-see for visitors and locals alike.

My wife and I visited Fairbanks on the tail end of a Princess cruise and visited the museum as an afterthought (killing time). We were delighted with the experience. A collection of this quality is about the last thing we expected to find in Fairbanks.

For me the cars were of greatest interest. The collection is large, and the cars are absolutely stunning. Most are restored to perfection, but several are in "as is" condition. Each car is accompanied by a caption giving production and other relevant statistics.

My wife particularly enjoyed the fashion displays. We highly recommend a visit if you are in Fairbanks.

Neither my wife, nor I, are interested in cars, but after running out of things to do in Fairbanks, we finally stopped by the museum. We are both so very impressed with the information and stories about each car, the well designed displays, the period clothes and especially the photographs documenting the history of autos in Alaska. You must visit, even if you could care less about cars!!
