We travelled from Anchorage to Denali on the McKinley Explorer. The train was spacious enough for our carry-on bags and comfortable. Our train guide was informative and was as excited as we were seeing Mt. McKinley! She shared much information, but by the end of our eight hours on the train, we were ready for some quiet time. We had breakfast and lunch on the train. Tried the reindeer sausage....it was not for us....but worth a try while there. Highly recommend the drinks from the bar! Excellent coffee with Bailey's, Kahula, and Amaretto! A different, fun way to travel and enjoy the breathtaking sights of Alaska!

Travelled the length of Alaska from Fairbanks back to Anchorage - a 12 hour trip. Whilst the train undoubtedly took the strain during that long day, I would seriously recommend only doing half the journey..... Fairbanks to Denali or Denali to Anchorage...or vice versa. This would be ample time to see this magnificent country without the danger of falling asleep mid track.
Credit Cards only on board....so foreign transactions quite expensive, especially for drinks. Whilst the kitchen is no Rocky Mountaineer culinary experience, it was quite acceptable.
Train guides entertaining, but musak did get a bit repetitive....why not ask for customers' selections?
It's probably the sort of journey you would only do once, but, as I said, consider 12 hours sitting on a slow train...even with grand scenery, only so much of which you can absorb in a long day...

Although there was a lot to see, unfortunately we couldn't see it for the tall trees each side of the track. The train is clean and comfortable but goes so slow it can get boring. The restaurant car is OK but a bit pricey and they have a captive audience. I would not bother again.

Comfortable scenic way to travel and take in the beauty of Alaska. We are on a hal tour. Coming from Whitehorse via several days on a bus this was a nice and welcome change of pace. Lots more room, comfort, visibility plus a dining car with Alaska reasonable prices. Breakfast $10 -15 and well presented and good with excellent service. Our one complaint was the constant narration, sales pitch, dumb trivia, life stories, requests for tips and directions over and over. On the four hour trip the hostess talked 3.7 and turned it over to others to fill the remaining time. Even my noise canceling ear phones and iPod music couldn't dampen her. Still looking forward to the 8 hour trip to Anchorage but hope we get a quieter hostess.
