Had the McKinley Explorer as our transit from Fairbanks to Denali on recent 2 week land+cruise vacation. It was fantastic. Spectacular views with great narration by the staff. Nice dining options for breakfast, and the bar was fantastic! Only knock would be the check-in process - was a bit chaotic, not well organized. But we sorta bulled our way into the thick of things, got our luggage checked, and despite being told we should wait another 15 minutes to board, wandered outside, where other staff was ready and willing to get us to our seats and help us get settled. But overall, a great experience!

Bar service on the train car was a big hit with our group of 8. Great views from the dome cars and the dining car was under us. Meal was good. We had the HAL meal plan.

Outstanding is the only word available to describe the McKinley Explorer. We rode the Explorer from Fairbanks to Denali NP, about a 4 hour trip, and then a couple of days later to Anchorage, an 8 hour trip. The train was made up of several types of cars and we were on the Holland America tour car. These HA dome cars are the only way to really enjoy the beautiful scenery of Alaska. The tour guides in each car really know how to make the trip fun and interesting. They were full of information about every significant mile marker on the trip, explained the history of the Alaska RR, and pointed out every significant detail concerning the beautiful scenery as it came into view. The bar in each car was fully stocked and the bartenders were outstanding additions to the team of folks providing meal and beverage service. They provided everything from "smoothies" to whiskey as we rode through the beauty of Alaska. We had lunch and dinner on the train and the food was excellent, well prepared, and the service was impeccable, right down to the white linen table cloth's. Each car was well equipped, the seats were comfortable, and moving about on the train was not a problem. The dome made it easy to take pictures and/or movies. I highly recommend the Holland America rail tour to see Denali and experience the state of Alaska.

We boarded the train in Fairbanks, riding to Denali. This was about four hours. Then after spending a day at the park, we boarded and headed for Anchorage. This takes about 8 hours, which seems long, but the day went quickly. The scenery is awesome and keeps you busy. Eating on the train is a fun experience, and considering you are a captive audience, the prices are not terrible. We had breakfast the first day, and dinner the second, taking a lunch with us. The service in the dome car is first rate. Drinks of all kinds are available and they offer a one price ($10) souvenir drink bottle, which they will fill as often as you wish with iced tea or soda. It was a great experience.

What can I say? It lives up to the hype. 3 grandparents and our 2 year-old LOVED it just as much. We saw a mother moose swim back to save the baby moose who was getting swept away by the current. Spectacular scenery, all tour guides were entertaining. Memories for a lifetime.
