I can't believe that in this day and age that we can walk up to the pipeline unattended. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad we can but it just seems dangerous to have it open to anyone. That aside, we really enjoyed seeing and reading about how this was accomplished and how it works. We walked along it for some time. Cool!

I stopped here on my way out of Fairbanks. It was just on the side of the road with a pull off. It has some interesting information about the pipeline. There are spots you can view the pipeline and take pictures. It’s free and you can see everything in about 20 minutes.

While the title and the markers all say visitor center, there really isn't much of a center at all. The visitor center is just a bunch of placards on the side of the rode next to where the Alyeska Pipeline rises above the ground outside of Fairbanks.

The exposition - it's just 2 "pigs" for cleaning the pipe from inside, one board and accessible "real" pipeline right off the highway ... Everything under open sky. Yes, it's small, but since it's free and tiny and since the Pipeline is such a big deal for Alaska, if you're driving by - sure! pull off and check it out.

We had a free hour during our recent visit to Fairbanks so took a trip up to the Alyeska Pipeline Visitor Center. It's not really a "visitor's center" per se but rather a pull off on the highway with a viewing area of the pipeline and some posters explaining how it was built.

You can see the pipeline above ground and also where it goes underground. It is kind of neat.

The location is Steese Highway at milepost 8.4 between Fox and Fairbanks.
