We only drove a short distance on the Steese highway but the part that we saw north of Fairbanks was not memorable other than a long delay and detour because of road reconstruction. On a very positive note, the flag person on the construction site, when asked how far the pipeline viewing area was, told us to pull out of line, bypass the stopped traffic and pull into our destination up the road.

Interesting highway and area around Fairbanks. Our tour group traveled it several times. Roads are in good condition considering the weather conditions in Alaska.

The view was pretty nice, but it's under very serious construction (like 1 lane and wait 5 minutes for the flagger to let the traffic going the other way go).

In general, avoid it until the construction is done.

I have driven the Steese Highway twice. It is a part sandpacked, part gravel road. It rolls through hills, goes past gold mining towns, and goes to the small town of Central, and Arctic Circle Hot Springs Resort. Sadly, this gem, the resort is closed. In its recent past, every room was lovingly decorated in Victorian style--what a surprise my first time. The area is home to hot springs. The highway runs approximately 8 degrees below the Arctic Circle. It ends at Circle on the Yukon River. I have not drilven that and was advised not to in my subcompact. Frost heaves and not much traffic in case of a breakdown. I was alone most of the time from about 45mins past Fairbanks to Central. Not spectacular, but interesting. A slice of real Alaska

We travel this road all the time. It is a nice ride. Some places are quiet and others are busy. Part of Steese Highway goes thru Fairbanks so you have the hustle of the city on it.
