Be careful when driving this highway. One night (at dusk) we encountered TWO moose that had been hit by cars, within a couple of miles of each other. They are massive and block the entire lane.

Drove up here twice, once in daylight (spotted the Alaska Trooper by thye 40 sign ) and then at night to enjoy the Aurora Borealis. Good road with parking pull offs.

Took the Steese Highway several times to and from Fairbanks in March 2011 and February 2012. While a bit unnerving when icy, the road is well maintained and the wintry, scenic drive is enjoyable. North of Fairbanks is the town of Fox, with a General Store and Silver Gulch Brewery across the street (great burgers). Continuing through Fox onto the Elliott Hwy (AK Route 2) will take you to the Hilltop Truck Stop (5-6 miles) where you can enjoy a good meal and pie.

Turning onto AK Route 6 will continue the scenic drive along the Steese, take you past the Pipeline viewing area and on up to Cleary Summit. Over the summit and about 8 miles down the other side is Chatanika Lodge/Restaurant, always a fun stop.

Looking forward to seeing the Steese again in 2013 (I think--this time I'm going in January!).

This is a really scenic drive with very pretty colours, especially during fall when we were there. There really isnt much to do in Fairbanks, but this is one of the drives which can make you fall in love with the place and gasp in awe of the pretty sights of nature.

I think you can see moose on the road, but we didnt spot any :(

Only took the Steese Highway as far as the Chatanika River campground area, but was shocked at how well maintained it was considering the winters they have. Scenes were beautiful and although we didn't see any, I'm told to watch out for the many moose that wander along the road! Recommend stopping at the Chatanika Lodge along the way...
