Owner description: Join the Binkley family for a trip through Alaska's gold mining history at Gold Dredge 8. Enjoy a close up view of the Trans Alaska Pipeline and a presentation about it's construction and operation. Then take a seat aboard a replica of the narrow-gauge Tanana Valley Railroad and hear the conductor tell tales of prospectors who arrived by the thousands during the gold rush. The train ride takes you to Gold Dredge 8 where you will see first-hand how the dredge worked the gold fields, then receive a brief but informative course on gold panning. Once the train arrives at the camp, you will try panning for yourself! You will find gold- we guarantee it! Finally, explore the dredge camp and enjoy complimentary coffee and freshly baked cookies in the gift shop as your gold is weighed, then hop aboard the train and return to the station.

We took this tour as part of a PRinses cruise in Alaska. It was totally not worth the price. A Large part of the tour is time to buy overpriced junk in their gift shop! Another part of the time was wasted on a bus ride from the dock to the dredge. The actual tour was technical and boring at times. The train ride was nice but short. The gold panning was fake and childish. Do not waste your time and money on this eccursion!

We visited Gold Dredge 8 on our recent Alaska tour and it was interesting and educational. The train ride to the dredge was very nice and informative.Everyone received a small bag of sand and gravel to pan for gold in the water troughs It was fun and rewarding when we found gold pieces. We then took them to be weighed and see how much we had. They put it in a plastic container for you or you could have it put in a necklace or pin. I had mine put in a pendant necklace for about $15.00 We had time to shop in the gift shop for gifts and their prices were the best we had seen and they had a good variety of sweatshirts, jackets etc.

A very commercial tour, but it gives you great insight in delving minerals in Alaska. The tour starts at the oil pipeline that runs through Alaska. It's explained by a tourguide. There's a train ride with entertainment on board. That runs you through the history on how to dig for gold. They will show you how to pan gold from a bag of dirt. And how the big Dredge No 8 is doing that. Then it's time to pan gold yourself. I found $17 worth of gold. Very informative and also nice for kids. 2 hours well spent.

This was an interesting activity. We first heard a bit about the history before boarding a slow-moving train that took us to where we panned for gold. Before the train departed, we were entertained by a wonderful man with a guita (on the way back. Along the way, we learned more about gold mining and the history of this mine. I really liked the workers/demonstrators, who were all dressed as if they were miners. The train takes you to what can only be termed as a one huge tourist trap, but that doesn't matter because you get off the train and are handed a sack of dirt that you take to the panning area and given a pan. We all "found" gold. It was pretty fun. I walked out with $8 worth of gold. Once you finish up your panning, you then go to the stores. They provide free fresh-baked cookies and beverages, and you wander about looking at the merchandise. I felt that the time given for wandering/spending was too long. Not enough places for people to simply sit and wait for the train. Overall, it was quite fun.
