Owner description: This restored building portrays the colonial medical practice of Washington family friend, Dr. Hugh Mercer. A native of Scotland, Mercer served in the French and Indian War before moving to Fredericksburg. He soon married, established an apothecary, and provided medical treatment for local citizens, including Mary Washington. A Brigadier General in the Revolution, the good doctor was at the Crossing of the Delaware and the Battle of Trenton. Upon learning that his friend had died from wounds suffered in the Battle of Princeton, a saddened George Washington called him "the brave and worthy Hugh Mercer."Captivating visitors of all ages, our guides use herbal remedies, crab claws, lancets, and live leeches to tell the stories of colonial medicine. Vivid descriptions of surgical practices are also provided.

Who would think an apothecary would be very interesting? Well, if you visit Hugh Mercer's, in Fredericksburg, VA, you will find the two docents will have you listening intently and not wanting to miss a word! It was very educational to learn how doctors treated their patients....in ways we are thankful we don't have to endure! Oh, the poor people of those long ago years. It makes you really appreciate what we have in this day and time.

An easy walk from the Fredricksburg Visitor Center. Interesting artifacts. Not accessible for anyone in a wheelchair.

I met my husband there.. The leaches came out and i jumped up into his lap.. I love this place!
I have taken all age groups and every visitor to my house and everyone has loved it!

It was like going back in time to a doctor's office from many years ago. Medical personnel would find this especially interesting.

The characters never break character so that was pretty neat. The tour itself is probably 30 minutes total so its a really quick stop while you are in the downtown Fredericksburg area.
