The staff is in character as tavern wenches. They give a lot of information about what it was like in the early years of our country. Also they explain how many of our sayings originated. It was $5 to go in, but well worth the cost. Plan to spend about 30 to 45 minutes here.

This place really surprised me. We stopped in Fredericksburg with our four kids and were mentally prepared to deal with whining from them being bored (Heaven forbid they should learn something!). We were greatly pleased by the tour of The Rising Sun Tavern. Two ladies dressed in period costume showed us around the tavern and explained in detail not only the history of the tavern, but explained the different items in the rooms and what they were used for. Commoners slept 15 men to a room! Most fascinating was the dining room, where they explained the money system, why pints had glass bottoms, and what a mousetrap looked like. Very fascinating. The kids were attentive and interested in everything. Very well done!

In addition to the positive reviews, I would add a few tips -

The tour lasts 30-45 minutes. You will be standing, walking, and climbing stairs the entire time. There are no benches to sit down during the tour.

There is an entrance fee of $5/adults and $2/children.

There is no photography allowed in the tavern.

They have a small bathroom open to the public.

There is also a very small gift shop area in a hallway.

Authentic and knowledgeable reenactors. My family thoroughly enjoyed learning about Colonial History at this tavern.

This was my 2nd visit to Fredericksburg over the past 21 years, but my family's first visit to The Rising Sun Tavern, which we visited based on the positive reviews on trip advisor. We weren't disappointed - it was a wonderful, informative tour. We arrived early on a Saturday morning, and for the majority of our tour, were the only tourists present. It was like receiving our own little personal tour - the guide was personable, knowledgeable and played right along with husband's jokes, incorporating them into the historical stories. It was a great experience!
