“going downhill”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

We normally go to Otani's vs other Japanese type restaurants because of the good food. Something is going on. Ginger sauce is watered down, soup is mostly broth, not like a year ago. I think we had a new chef. All food was way overcooked. Wife wanted steak medium, came out overly well done and chewy. My shrimp was overcooked and I had to tell him when to take scallops off so he wouldn't over cook them. Ruined the lobster of the couple next to us. DUDE, It's already cooked, just add butter and heat. They try to stuff you with an overly large amount of fried rice so you're full by the time the entree comes. Soup and salad together, not one at a time. Sushi appetizer came during dinner. Not us but here's the deal. If it's habachi seating why is there a mandatory 18% tip. Hey the table is for 8-10 so noithing extra us required of the server or chef. On the other side our chef was a good guy, just didn't know how to cook. The server did not ever bring me my water after the meal as I asked.

“Fabulous Food and Experience”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

The food and service was outstanding. They give you generous portions and reasonable prices. This is a place that I will frequent quite often.

“Always Rushed Out With Forced Tip”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

This place has good (but salty) food. The chef can be hit or miss - either engaging or mechanical. But what really turns me off is how they try to rush you through your meal so they can get the next party seated. Of course with the tip built into the bill, they don't feel the need to let you enjoy the last sip, the last spoonful of dessert. They rush the dessert at you before you've finished the main course, then they try to clear the table before you're done with your dessert and wine. They even tried to start resetting our table for the next party before we were done, with a pile of plates and napkins plopped down next to us and three of them glaring at us! So sad they put short-term profits ahead of making happy customers, which would guarantee long-term profits if they actually stopped to think about it.

“Something's Changed”
Reviewed September 2, 2012 via mobile

My family and I went the Saturday of Labor Day weekend for dinner, and we're surprised to find the restaurant not very busy. Perhaps it was the holiday weekend. Perhaps it was something else.
We hadn't been to Otani for several months, and it's just not the same. It felt very rushed, even though there were no customers waiting for tables. We made a reservation and were seated immediately. Our waitress took our drink orders right away and when she returned with the drinks, was ready to take our dinner orders. We had barely gotten settled. Our soup and salad were served at the same time--this wasn't always the case. The chef came a few minutes later and got right to business. He was friendly and entertaining, but again, everything felt rushed.
The place isn't looking so great, either. The outside is in serious need of maintenance, and the window treatments inside were practically falling off the walls. It just didn't feel as special as it has in the past.
