This is a must see for Civil War history buffs but also an important and interesting spot to visit for the casual history fan. Lots of helpful rangers and placards help bring the battles to life.

These National Battlefields are a must see for Civil War buffs. The Wilderness National Battlefield is also nearby. All three Battlefields have driving tours that go by the major points of the battles. The Chancellorsville Battlefield has a new (2014) museum exhibit that is first class. You can easily drive through all three battlefields one after the other. Not far from I-95. I recommend you start at Fredericksburg then move to the Wilderness National Battlefield off RT3.

Very nice remodeled visitors center. You walk out right to the heights where the contentious battle took place. If you know the story of this battle, looking up that hill to the sunken road really puts the Federal challenge into perspective. There's a great movie in the visitors center if you don't know about the battle. Nice little walk around the field. Don't miss out on Chancellorsville which is close by.

If you only have time to visit one site, go on the walking guided tour of the bloody angle, although note the details are graphic and might be upsetting to young kids or those who are sensitive to suffering and brutality, as the name of the site clearly hints.
What I did not expect is the peaceful and beautiful landscape with long drives on uncrowded small roads in the woods. There are plenty of stopping places with plaques and visible residues of trenches.
You must go on a ranger lead tour, and ask questions; for example the trenches seem barely useful now, but this is due to the timbers rotting and erosion of the earthworks.
Allow lots of time as the area is huge. Consider taking a picnic as there are designated areas set up for this and well equipped visitor centres with rest rooms.
Stay and see the film (nominal charge of $2).
Exhibits are continually being improved but even now there is plenty to see.

There were plenty of rangers around to answer questions and help us out. The video was great too. The exhibits were under construction but they look like they will be a nice addition when complete.
