What makes this restaurant a unique and enjoyable experience is the fact that their mainstay brews and seasonal brews are civil war inspired. They use local ingredients for their beer and also use their beer for many of their tasty recipes! They also host charitable events which comes to show that they care about organic growth and like to give back to the community! So go support a local business that makes your taste buds happy they visited such a fine establishment!

Slightly off the beaten Fredericksburg path, but delicious beers and food make this worth a visit. Tie it into a tour of the brewery, and do some free tastings of the different beers in the brewery! Buy a beautiful large growler to bring some home for later!!

I have visited Lee’s Retreat Brewpub in the past, this was my first visit in 14 months, and not much has changed. The pub was busy which was nice to see, although the bartender admitted it was not the norm. Obviously, the patrons were coming for the same reason we were--free wings.

A member of our party is an email subscriber to Blue and Gray Brewery. The special offer he received was as follows:

“Free Wings! Our IronWing [sic] competition has begun. Join us December 9th and 10th for a FREE sampler plate of wings. You'll get a ballot too. Vote for the best. Every table with an Email subscriber that joins us for lunch or dinner in the brewpub will be given a complimentary plate of the new wings. Treat yourself while selecting the next great wing recipe.”

We were a little disappointed when our “sampler plate of wings” arrived. 2 wings on a plate and 4 containers of sauce, yeah we had to double dip. What do you say about this, really?

Anyhow, we had another round and ordered the alleged “Spicy Blue Buffalo Wings.” As with my previous visits, we had to wait, and wait. Some of the group grew impatient, I told them this seemed to be the norm, and hey, they were pretty busy. Wings arrived; they were hot this time, although they were not spicy and were not “buffalo” by definition. Wings with blue cheese sauce are a better descriptor.

The most important part of the review: Beer, yes they brew beer that people like. They did run out of the APA while we were there, but that is OK, we simply moved on to another brew. I think it is OK to run out of stuff, somehow it means special attention is being paid to what is made, quality v. quantity I suppose.

Finally, the happy hour prices cannot be beat anywhere in town, they are so good it allows for failure here and there, with that we can try something other than the wings with blue sauce. Besides as I said, the beer is good and that is what really matters.

A lot of people would never know this place was in town. Great place once you find it!
