Owner description: Federal soldiers who died in the Civil War are buried here.

Stopped at the visitors center and talked to a very knowledgeable man there, saw the movie and then were given a walking map of the battlefield and cemetery. Tour was very easy to follow and after we walked around the cemetery and it was a very solemn walk. We had never heard of this battle before but learned it was a major battle. Walking around the battlefield put the battle into perspective. Any civil war buff should make this a must see.

If its a sunny day, just wander around and think about the futility of the Civil war, so many men killed for little purpose. But the graves are very well kept.

Located next to the Fredericksburg Battlefield, this place fulfills its duty as place to pay one's respects to one's brothers-in-arms who helped shape this nation as well as place to think about the high cost of any war no matter how just it may have been or will be.

Of thousands of Union soldiers buried here, only a small percentage have been identified, most low-ranking soldiers. As I look at the graves, I can't help but reflect on the soldiers themselves. Who were they;how old were they;did they have children or a girlfriend or did they leave behind their parentsd;did they have a job or were they students, so many questions. It's easily forgotten that these were living, breathing men.

The cemetery is located in the city of Fredericksburg about a mile from the downtown area. The film and museum are very interesting and the park rangers are very knowledgeable. The walking tour with the park ranger is worth the time. The Civil War information is very interesting but at times is quite gruesome. However, this did not seem to bother the children ages 8 and 10 who were with us. The 2 hours we spent there was just the right amount of time for the kids. We have been there other times with adults visiting from our of town and again 1-2 hours is just right.
