“A place to have a cup of coffee and a pastry”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

Went there on as Saturday evening. Sit down with a friend for a cup of tea. Do not ask for another cup to cool off the tea as they will call the boss for approval" I will get fired" whimpered a young girl. In the end they will charge you supposedly to prevent tea sharing. Knowing this place is mostly frequented by students, it shows the length the owner will go to ensure profit. The cakes have similar flavoring - the jamaican, the tiramisu, the baclava, etc are very sweet. Got the eclair was ok although perhaps a tad old, the rum babka (?) dry and old. The gelato " hazelnut" tasted mily like the one at the mall. The croissants taste good when fresh. In a nutshell living in Boston you take what you can, choices are limited and mediocrity should suffice.

“Great gem In Washington Square”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

This place is great.. right across the street from the Washington Square Tavern in Brookline. this little eatery has a bountiful mix of confectionery delights and regular food items fro steak and frites to eggplant and cupcakes to cookies. The owners are very knowledgeable about what the ingredients of each confection and are a pleasure to talk to. Don't miss out

“Gelatto!”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

The European-style desserts at this bakery at rich and delicious! The gelatto is also extremely good. I have seen wedding cakes in the display cakes, and they look very well done. If you are in Brookline, try Athan's for a sweet treat!

“Best croissant ever.”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

I'm not much of a dessert person, but I love decadent breakfast treats, and I can assure you that Athan's makes the best, most buttery, most melt-in-your-mouth croissants I've ever tasted. I love to go pick up a bag of croissants to bring home, especially when they're warm! They have other great treats for breakfast too, like chocolate croissant and apple strudels, as well as little cheese pies that my husband loves. I rarely sit and eat here since it's frequently so crowded, but it's a nice little space to sit if you can grab a spot.
