“Casual elegance in a wonderful location”
Reviewed July 21, 2012

My husband and I travel to Boston a couple times each year to go to Red Sox games, and we stay at the Samuel Sewall Inn, or its sister B&B across the street, the Bertram Inn. The rooms are lovely and well-appointed. The buildings themselves are beautiful with amazing details in the woodwork and the stained glass windows. The bathrooms can be a bit small, depending on which room you reserve, but they are always clean, The breakfast is good too, there are usually a couple hot dishes, assorted cereals, yogurt, and fruit. Addiitionally, there always snacks available, like granola bars, fruit, and cookies. During nice weather, there is outside seating available. I have found the employees to be helpful, giving some suggestions for restaurants, etc.

The inn is located in Brookline, just outside the Boston city line, and within walking distance to Fenway Park - about a 20 minute walk. You don't realize you've left Boston at all. Access to the T (Boston's train/subway system) is a block away - so convenient. The neighborhood is great, lots of restaurants, bars, bookstores, etc. close by, but not close enough to hear any noise. The street is quiet, and well-maintained homes surround this B&B. My husband and I have frequently walked around the neighborhood at night, it never feels unsafe, and the streets are well-lit.

My only negative is that you have to pay for parking. I don't understand why they do that - I am paying for a room, and you can't include the parking space? The last time we stayed, I believe it was $15 per night. I think they should waive this.

The inn is in a great neighborhood, close to public transportation and the sprawling Longwood Medical Complex in Boston. Proximity to the "Emerald Necklace" was great for early morning runs along a leafy trail that follows a stream and leads to several large ponds. The staff was very helpful. I felt very much at home here. The rooms vary. I especially like rooms 1 and 2. Plus the inn seems to attract a nice clientele looking for something more than a Marriott-type hotel. A fair number of young couples with children, all very pleasant and friendly, to balance out the older crowd. If I return to Boston I will stay here again.

Location is great if you like to stay in Brookline, like I do. Walking distance to Coolidge Corner, and public transportation. The room didn't feel like a hotel room, but like a bedroom in a house (which it is). It was furnished with antiques, beautiful wall paper on the walls.
The bathroom was small, but adequate. Everything was clean. The AC worked great, but there was no thermostat and controls in the room, which I like to have. Also, no coffee maker in the room, which also I like to have.
The breakfast was very nice, and since it was warm outside it was possible to enjoy it sitting outside in their patio. Very nice. The indoor dining area is not very appealing and probably feels cramped when full of people, since it's small.
The main disadvantage is the fact that you have to carry your luggage up the stairs. The ladies that work there do help with that, but I find that uncomfortable, especially if you are a man.
The staff was nice, friendly, and helpful.

This was the best place we stayed in on our trip. The location is really central. The house is really charming and full of character and the rooms are amazing. Ours was massive, like a suite with a sofa, a huge bed and great bathroom. It had all the little extras, great bathroom products, chocolates laid out on the bed and fluffy bathrooms. Those touches make the difference. Breakfast was fine though we were the last down so most of the stuff was gone. The only downside was the service, one was super helpful and the other didn't as much as say hello. B&B's need to have a bit more of a personal touch. Overall a great experience and we would return for sure.

They have a great breakfast every morning. The hot entree is served at 8, but there are cold items available before that. There are snacks and coffee available throughout the day.

It's just a 5 minute walk from the T and from great Brookline restaurants.

My husband and I enjoyed two nights at the Inn recently and could not have been happier. The room was beautiful, quiet and very clean. The breakfast was amazing...every day a different hot entree. The staff was professional and extremely helpful. The location was so convenient to everything in Boston. The green line train was a mere block away. Thanks so much for the perfect getaway!!!

Cookies are always best! Great breakfast in new England style. Doorman is handsome and warmhearted. 5min walk to "T". However, in winter you need to ask for a heater. I will come back!
