“An awesome place for any history buff”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

Having lived in Maryland for 20 years, I was shocked I hadn't heard of Fort Washington. It was worth the drive though. The view from the fort was amazing! To be able to look out and see D.C from the top was awe inspiring. The history behind the place was fascinating too. To see all the changes the fort had undergone, look at the guns, and see how everything changed was really fun! The buildings on the property were all beautiful and the fort itself is too, which is why I was a little saddened by the state of the area. Quite a few of the old buildings on the property were simply boarded up and in a complete shape of disrepair. It's would have been nice to at least see a marker near those buildings to know what they once were. Many parts of the lower part of the fort were in a similar state too.

This is a really great place to go though if you love history. It's just amazing to see something that's been around so long, and had such a big job. And, even if you don't like history there are plenty of beautiful trails and nice picnic areas.

“This is Washington DC's version of Baltimore's Ft Mchenry”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

Except this fort has never been attacked. Otherwise it's very similar. Very picturesque!
You can easily spend all day there. If it is your first time there I recommend going on a day where there is a tour (currently only on weekends) . On some Sunday's they even fire a cannon. I got to see Civil War era rifles fired by people dressed in period attire. There are also plenty of bathrooms, even one inside the fort! The yellow building has a nice museum in it. Aside from this museum, it's pretty much an outdoor attraction. Not everything they have available for the day with respect to tours is not listed on their webpage, it was listed on a board at the Visitors Center/Museum, so I'd recommend calling ahead to see what's offered (I think they were mostly different types of tours). Another interesting thing about this place is that the deer are not afraid of people.

Note: This fort is easy to get to, there are plenty of signs. Watch out for the speed humps!

“Fun to walk around”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

Fort Washington is a great place to get some exercise, take the dog on a walk, bring the kids and have a picnic or even have a cookout. Filled with great history, Fort Washington is something everyone can enjoy. I have many fond memories as a child, teenager and adult.
