“Very well worth it...”
Reviewed October 29, 2013 via mobile

So glad we stopped here while visiting Ft. Smith... The grounds were very well kept and beautiful... Parking lot (free) was very easily accessible even for RV's and had RV parking... There is a nice park off to the left that is by the river... Interpretation stations to stop and read while you walk along with really nice benches and great photo ops... To the right of the parking lot is the famous gallows and more interpretation stations... An old commissary is also on the grounds... All these are free... The museum inside is where the Hell On The Border jail is, along with some really great history for all you buffs like us... It's $4 pp to get in (that's reg. price)... There is a gift shop and elevators for handicap... They also have a little theatre... The bathrooms are nice and clean and the staff was friendly... Very informative... We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here... Expect between and hour to three hours, depending on what you do... Highly recommended...

“Great Site”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

We loved visiting the grounds here. The area's history is well interpreted. We could not see the inside, due to the shutdown, but I would expect it to be great.

“Fort Smith Historic Site”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

This is more than The Historic site of Fort Smith for this is where Fort Smith began. It was an original Rock wall fort that was built to protect the area from the Indians and the criminals that would cross back and forth over the border. Here also sits the original Court House of Judge Parker also known as the hanging judge. His reputation was that he hung more men than he let go, but in all he only got to hang very few while he protected the border because of his death of pneumonia while sitting as judge. Today there is a book available at the library or at a book store known as Hell on the Border, this book will give you the real insight of the early days of Fort Smith. Though today the court house still stands as well as the commissary but the most viewed part of the park is the gallows that still stand in it's original site though it has been reconstructed over the years. Public hangings were an item in their day where people would take their families and have a picnic before the hanging took place. Today it is not in operation to look at it you would not ever know this. This is a wonderful site to see if you are a history buff because there is much history in such a small area. If you are in Fort Smith this is a must see while you are here because it is like walking back in time more than a 100 years. There is plenty of room for a picnic today as well as letting your children run around and play on the cannons. So make it a fun day and see the other attractions that are near because there are many all with-in walking distance. So come on in for the southern hospitality and have a wonderful day.

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the gallows, the historical museum - especially Hanging Judge Parker's courtroom and gallows and the National Cemetery. The park setting was very well kept and lovely. Would recommend.
