“Down-Home comfort”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

I stayed in this hotel on whim for one night while I was visiting near-by Nevada. I don't like big hotels or really modern hotels and don't like to feel like I'm traveling. So this was perfect for me. Although the room I picked was smaller than the others it was light and airy. While there wasn't a closet there was an antique wardrobe, which again, I preferred. Very quiet area, I heard no loud talking or music or hustle and bustle from the street. If you like the simply life this is probably the hotel to choose in the area. It is less expensive than most b&b but you get the simplicity of a b&b. On a side note there are many books around to look through. In the parlor there were books as well as a fiction book in my room. I flipped through these at night and it was more refreshing for me than flipping on the t.v.

I needed a place to stay and the place was perfect. The gentleman that checked me in was most friendly and I loved my room. The shower had great pressure and it was nice and hot. Was just what I needed.

The overall appearance of the hotel, had a feeling of home in a small town. I will definately stay again,

Thanks for a good night sleep,
George

Had a great two-night stay at the Courtland. Frank was very friendly and engaging, extremely knowledgeable about the history of his building. Gave us Room 1, which was larger than I'd expected, with a very comfortable King Bed, and beautifully furnished. Will definitely be returning!

Room Tip: We loved Room 1!

Our second stay. Frank has an energetic and positive welcome. There are limitations -- no elevator to second floor rooms. A wonderful wide winding creaky wooden staircase instead. Walking down you can enjoy the large foyer with bright Christmas tree. Bathrooms are very small...there probably weren't any when the hotel was originally built. Beds are high off the floor but provide a delicious sleep. Trains going through Fort Scott and the nature of old hotels make it not overly quiet. Easy stroll to historic downtown and Fort Scott's Candlelight Tour each December. This hotel is NOT for handicapped. But we loved it.

Renovated historic property offers something different than the usual B&B. The family running the property is nice, and the rooms are ok size, but beds feel old, bedspreads look and feel cheap, bathrooms are minimal. Shower stall is small and precarious. For a "spa" hotel, there isn't any spa-like luxury starting with having to navigate steep steps to get upstairs to the rooms and ending with the flimsy plastic cups in the rooms. There is no "noise" privacy; every footstep and voice down the hallway can be heard. Bring earplugs if you want to sleep. Wi-fi connection is sporadic. It's a bit pricey for actual comfort and services, but if you want charm, then you might get it.

Lovely historic hotel. Very friendly innkeeper that is eager to help. Room was clean and comfy. Good breakfast variety. The only drawback is no elevator, by my elederly parents managed the staircase well. Walking distance to Ft. Scott historical site, downtown restaurants and shops. Rooms are small, but that is a given with these older hotels. After driving around town,,, i was sooo glad we stayed here as the other hotels looked a bit scary!

As my husband used to live in Ft. Scott we have had several motel experiences in Ft. Scott that were not pleasant. We needed several rooms and were pleased that they could accomodate us. This is the only motel/hotel you should stay at in Ft. Scott. The others are very unpredictable as far as being clean and bug free. The Courtland is a breath of fresh air and very enjoyable to stay in. Yes, the rooms are small, but that is to be expected in an updated 1900 hotel. Anytime we are going back to Ft. Scott, I hope they will always have rooms available to us. They are very friendly and hospitable.

Room Tip: If you need a larger room, try to get the ones with King beds.
