“Another great Marriott Stay”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

I can not say enough great things about the Marriott. From the warm greeting at valet, front desk and room service. My daughter has major food allergies and Marriott has the Gluten / Dairy free down. The location was great. We enjoyed our time and will be back.

Room Tip: be sure to get a river view!

We were traveling to Myrtle Beach from Florida and stopped in Savannah for a night on our way. Savannah is one our favorite spots due to the great food, night life and street performers. This hotel was absolutely perfect! When we arrived I was a little scared because we like to walk everywhere and this hotel is on the edge of town however it was still walking distance. It was a very nice stroll on the river walk to the actual stores and restaurants. We arrived and parked for check in. Brittany was very sweet and explained how to walk to the downtown area, and where everything was in the hotel. She upgraded us to a balcony view and the water which was an extra special treat! I love balconies and this one overlooked the riverwalk. We quickly went to our room and dropped off our bags. The room was very clean and the beds and pillows comfy! The room was well stocked with the little shampoos, conditionor, etc. My son loves these and used them all! The hotel was very quiet overall. There was a party in the atrium area as well as the bar was pretty full but we never heard a thing from our room. We will definitely be staying here again. I loved that we didnt have to walk down to the riverwalk like most hotels. I hate stairs and some in the down town area are very steap. Walking from this hotel is maybe 3 minutes but it is a beautifully well lit path to and from.

Room Tip: Get a balcony. It is great to sit out in the evenings while the kids are sleeping or early in the mo...

The rooms are well kept and clean. The staff was polite and helpful. Well located in the historic district within walking distance to all the shops on River Street and The Pirates House Restaurant. The only negative is the $18.00 a night they charge for parking.

This is a big, fairly nondescript hotel, but there are some real pluses. Kathy Jo, who checked us in, was tremendously helpful in orienting us to the city. She was just as friendly when we returned twenty minutes later and confessed that we'd forgotten some of the important info she'd given us and asked her to repeat it. The water ferry stop is right outside the hotel. Our room looked out on the river, where big ships glide by. The bathroom was spacious. My one quibble: no screen on the sliding door to the balcony. We would have slept with the door open and the overly aggressive AC turned off, but without a screen the bugs would have been our roommates. The bed was particularly comfortable: nice, thick mattress topper.

Hotel was ok. Big entrance. Large rooms, good toiletries, flat screen tv.

Negatives - So loud, we barely slept at all because of all the people in the halls. I realize this isn't really the hotels fault, but I guess a negative to staying near downtown is all the drunk people. I think there was a fee for the internet. No breakfast. Our room view was of the lobby - not exciting!!!! Have to go upstairs to get to checkin, which seems silly when carrying lots of bags.

Room Tip: Don't want to pay $18/night for parking. Don't!! Walk .2 miles and park directly across the...

Positives:

- Located directly on the river, so the riverfront rooms provide a small balcony from which you can watch cargo ships go by. There are also rooms that look out upon the atrium of the hotel.
- There is a water ferry stop behind the hotel; a boat comes about every 45 minutes until about 7 p.m. or so and makes a few stops at other hotels and the main riverfront area of downtown Savannah
- The staff are very friendly and helpful; they go out of the way to display "Southern hospitality." They respond to requests quickly. At one point, we asked for a fridge and one was delivered within 30 minutes.
- For Marriott elites, free WiFi (normally $12.95 a day), free breakfast buffet, and free access to Concierge lounge
- Location is about a 10 minute walk to the main Riverfront area (though during summer, with the heat and humidity, it can feel a lot further) and behind the hotel, there is a stone terrace area with seats where you can relax by the river away from the noise and congestion of the more crowded area

Negatives:

- The hotel seems a bit worn and showing age in places
- The bed was rather sunken, old, and definitely not the high-end type that is now standard in the better Marriott properties.
- Television had limited selection: no "on-demand" movies and also no premium channels. Did not even have HD Movie channel or other channels frequently found in Marriott. Basically just cable with a couple of normal stations in HD.
- AC in the room was effective at keeping it cool during oppressive summer heat but was also loud -- and ever-present background noise
- Fixtures are somewhat old; our shower-bath lever broke off during our stay, requiring a visit from the maintenance man (who did come promptly)
- The location of the hotel is not as good as others such as the Hyatt which are more in the central area of the riverfront and closer to the historic district. The Marriott is at the end of the Riverfront, so it is a walk to everything; there are really no shops or restaurants "right there" which some people might like. To be clear, it isn't far but it is not the ideal place to stay if you want to walk out your door and be in the historic district.
- Room service food options are rather limited and everything - I mean everything - shuts down around 10 p.m. (11 p.m. at latest, for room service) at this hotel.
- Lots of kids running in the hallways and in the pool area; my impression is that this place is a notch below some of the other properties and tends to attract a more varied clientele, including lots of families with small kids

Overall, this is an adequate hotel with some positives and negatives and it would probably be best suited for a family (especially if one gets a suite). However, I would only recommend it if one gets an excellent price -- it is not worth full rack rate. On my next visit, I would be more inclined to try the Hyatt Regency, Bohemian, or Avia for something on or close to the river and historic downtown area.

Very nice, very large hotel. This hotel is a conference hotel and has the feel of one, do not expect Savannah atmosphere. The hotel will not give your the romance or history ambience of Savannah. The Savannah trolly bus does stop right outside the hotel which is a plus. Breakfast is good enough, and has fresh fruit. Only a small walk to the center and perfect for river walks.
