“A charming hotel in a great location”
Reviewed March 13, 2014

This is a charming rather old-fashioned hotel in a great location, two minutes walk to the river waterfront and close to places of interest and many good restaurants. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was a nice touch having a bowl of apples for guests on the reception desk, and we enjoyed the cheese and wine in the evening before going out for dinner. The free continental breakfast was lovely but the mezzanine floor where it was served got very crowded and we couldn't always get a table. Apart from that everything was really good.

Room Tip: Try to get a room which does not face directly onto the car park.

Excellent accommodations, perfect location, clean well appointed rooms, service staff was helpful and polite at all times. Need anything - ask Karen the concierge - a perfect southern lady with all the info.

We were greeted with warmth and helped with our luggage. Parking is $15 a day valet so not bad. Breakfast was very good with grapefruit, bananas, and strawberries as well as cereals and pastries. We had a nice view over the square and the location was excellent to walk to everything. The only complaint was that the bed was way too soft, I woke up very stiff every day.

We love the Planters Inn for its location and amenities, which is a good value for downtown Savannah. However our last experience was somewhat unnerving, and it had nothing to do with the hotel. Some of the late night bars on Broughton Street, which is a block south of the hotel can get quite rowdy at night, and the night we walked back, the area was cordoned off by police cars because of several shootings. My advice if you're going to be out after midnight is to drive, and use the valet parking.

Okay, let me begin by saying that the two days we stayed, 6 and 7 march, we're probably some of the coldest wettest days you could ever choose, but I hope this has not coloured my review.

Arrival: We travelled from the UK to do a tour of the Southern states and Florida. We were travelling with friends on a self drive tour, so we had stayed our first night in St Augustine in a Comfort Inn, where we received the warmest of welcomes from the reception.

The next day we travelled in dreadful weather conditions to Planters on Reynolds, where we were staying for two days. We arrived far earlier that the 4 pm check in time (which I have to say seems extremely late to me) and we're told by a rather dour staff member that our rooms would not be ready until the 4 pm check in. This was probably around 1pm. She did offer to put our bags into a secure room, however, so that we could go out.

Apart from the very cold entrance lounge area, there is nowhere else at the hotel where you could sit in the warm, read a book, maybe watch TV to while away an hour or three. So we all went out to try and pass some time. But remember my beginning...this was the worst weather to walk around in and after an hour we were totally soaked through despite wearing waterproof jackets.

We went back to the hotel and asked the reception if our rooms might be available? "No, not yet". We asked if there was anywhere we might be able to dry out our clothes, but that question was met with a no once again. So we all sat in the reception lounge with our wet coats piled on the floor to wait for the room. BUT suddenly, in comes two other guests who went to the reception, got their room keys, and off they went!

So back to the desk we went again and commented that other people seem to be getting rooms, so what's the problem? This time we were told she would find us alternative rooms as she had been trying to keep us together as we were travelling together. Finally we got rooms! Of course as previous reviewers have noted, they were directly overlooking the car park with no net screens on the windows, so it's like being in a gold fish bowl! When I complained at the desk about the lack of privacy I was told that the screens have been taken down as they are renovating the rooms.

On a positive note, yes the wine and cheese is a lovely touch, as is the coffee and late night cookies. However, the concierge clearly expected to be tipped for what was a complimentary glass of wine and was very dismissive when my husband pointed out that the wine glass was dirty with lipstick..."dishwashers don't always remove lipstick". Really?! Well in that case you check them and rehash them surely.

Planters is in a lovely location, very good for getting down to the river, etc but we would not choose to stay there again.

My husband and I had a wonderful time during our stay this past weekend. Upon arrival we were greeted by the helpful and friendly staff. The Valet service and check-in was smooth, plus we arrived during the social hour so we were served wine and cheese. We stayed in Room 702, which was a large room with a fireplace, small refrigerator and separate bath area. It was very comfortable and beautiful with a great view of the city's many church steeples! The concierge was extremely helpful with arranging a carriage ride and dinner at the Old Pink House. The hotel is walking distance to all the city's attractions, restaurants and shopping. We are looking forward to returning in the near future!

Planters Inn is in a very good location if you're visiting Savannah. The rooms aren't very distinctive, but decent size and clean. The main lobby is plain and lacks character, and when we stayed there was very cold during a cold snap down south. The place seems to be popular with retiree tourists on a budget. Breakfast was blah. Not a bad place for the money, but if you can afford more there are much better options in Savannah. I wouldn't stay here again. One highlight was the valet/bellman, Sam, who was very friendly and helpful.
