Joan's on Jones B & B
Ranked #22 of 30 Savannah B&B and Inns
Reviewed May 20, 2006

My husband I stayed here for 3 nights during our first trip to Savannah. It was wonderful! We were in the Garden Street and had a lovely private entrance, sitting area and great accommodations. There were muffins, croissants, juice, milk and cereal in our room to have when we chose, which we liked because we hate to be on a time schedule while on vacation. There was also a bottle of wine and sodas in the fridge when we arrived. You could not have asked for a better location-we were within walking distance to everything that Savannah had to offer! We didn't even need to move the car. There was off street parking at the inn, which after hearing people in Savannah talk, is a very rare. Right around the corner is the Mercer House, and just a short walk away is Forsythe Park. Another plus for us is that we always travel with our Great Dane and it is sometimes
difficult to find a nice place to stay with him, but Joan's On Jones worked out great! We will definitely be back and will share our experience with friends and family!

We had an unpleasant experience:

1. When we checked in and inquired about breakfast for the following morning, we were told that breakfast was already in our room. There were knats flying around the food that left it unappetizing so we did not eat. We mentioned the knat problem to the owner and assumed the items would be replaced the next day, but found the same muffins and croussants that were by now soggy. The milk found in the refrigerator was also sour. When the owner was contacted she questioned our assessment. Once the sour milk was delivered to her it was replaced. We ended up getting breakfast elsewhere both of the days we stayed there. We requested some refund due to this but never heard back. One of the things we like about staying at a B and B is a fresh breakfast each morning and hospitable owners. This B and B provided neither.

2. The window of the room had been left open which left us fighting off mosquitoes. We requested bug spray that evening but could not reach the owners so did not receive until the next day.

3. We did not get much sleep due to barking of the owners dogs and the dog with a guest in the room next to our room. There was also noise from the dogs running around upstairs.

4. The bathroom was not clean.

5. The location was convenient but not worth it. Overall it was a very disappointing experience especially considering the cost of the room which is much higher than most hotels in the area.

We booked at Joan's on Jones on the advice of a former Savannah resident. We did not pay too much attention to the "pet friendly" reference on the information we received from Joan's...perhaps we should have.

We arrived in the wee hours of Saturday morning due to airline delays.
Joan's had sent detailed instructions about how to retrieve our key from their lockbox, so this late arrival was not a problem. So far so good.

We began to notice problems as soon as we entered the garden suite at the rear of Joan's. One issue was the strong smell of dog that permeated the place, especially the entry area just outside the suite.

Once inside, it became apparent that general cleanliness was a bit of a problem as well. There were lots of black hairs on the bathroom floor, and a few in the sink and the tub as well. I wasn't too sure whether they were human or animal, not that it really mattered.

In the bedroom, there was a quite an accumulation of dust and dirt along the baseboards. A glass table top next to the bed was completely covered with smudges, evidently not having seen as much as a damp rag in a good long time. A little Windex and a paper towel would have done wonders in no time at all.

We also encountered a mystery puddle in the middle of the tiled floor of the sitting area. I swear it wasn't there when we walked in the door, but my wife put her foot in it a few minutes later. The was no evident source for the puddle, but combined with the smell of dog, we were making some unpleasant guesses.

We finally managed to get to sleep, but were awakened all too early by footsteps and pawsteps overhead in the owner's kitchen. This was not really the owner's fault, but it wasn't quite the secluded experience we were looking for, especially after spending 3+ hours delayed at O'Hare the night before.

Things did not improve a whole lot. There were assorted croissants and muffins provided for breakfast, but oddly we didn't find any sugar for coffee. The cleaning person arrived but left without making too much of an impact on the state of the bathroom.

We decided that this was not the place for us. Joan was helpful in finding us another accommodation, but was firm about not refunding either of the two nights we had reserved, at $144/night. So we were out of pocket around $300 with taxes included, all for a stay of about 16 hours.

We ended up at the Zeigler House B&B a block away, for $200/night. This was of course more than our initial budget, but after our trauma the first night, we found it more than worth it for large immaculate rooms on the fourth floor.

We stayed at Joan's on Jones in December of 2002 with our two dogs, and were very impressed with the quality of the accomodations. Nice attention to detail and spacious.

Joan and Gary were both very cordial "innkeepers" and had good knowledge of the local area - including some excellent restaurant recommendations. This was a great location in historic Savannah, and we recommend it to anyone that loves to travel with their special four-legged companions!

We spent five nights at Joan's on Jones in June, 2003. Our suite was the front one off Jones street. There is a second one at the rear with a little courtyard. We aren't experienced B&B'ers but the few we have stayed with sometimes feel like you are in someone's home and you have to tell them where you are going and when you will be home! This is not one of those. Joan was available but invisible. The house was built in 1853 and had the most beautiful heart of pine plank flooring that was treated with linseed oil that had a nice glow to it. Our bed was very comfortable and our daughter could have had either a sofabed or a roll-away. Sliding doors separated the two rooms. Coffee, juice, fruit and rolls were supplied. There was a small refrig and icemaker in the room. Location was about 10 short blocks from the river, deep in the historical district, around the corner from Mercer House. Would highly recommend Joan's.
