“A Tired Look”
Reviewed February 5, 2007

While on our way back to Florida, we stopped in Savannah for the evening and figured that the Hyatt Regency must be as nice as most of their other properties. However, this one was a disappointment. The lobby was okay, nothing great. The room was "very tired" looking; however, the bed was comfortable.
We had to move from our "first room", as there was a tremendous amount of mold on the tile in the bathroom and the back of the bathroom door was a mess. They moved us to another room and, again, the bathroom was awful. This time the tile on the floor was dirty, again the back of the door was a mess from someone's makeup and the very small closet had a huge pipe exposed with this terrible looking caulking holding it up.
Fortunately, we were only spending the night (if we were going to stay longer we would have moved to another hotel). The only redeeming feature was their dining room. We had a truly great dinner with excellent service; great wine list and a wonderful view of the river. That's about all I can say about the property that was positive.

My husband and I have traveled to Savannah several times over the last 20 years. For our trip in July we chose the Hyatt as we found a great rate on the internet and always wanted to stay there. We arrived in the early afternoon and were told there was no problem checking in early. The room we were assigned had an unpleasant smell so we called down to the front desk and were immediately given another room and offered bell service to move our luggage. The second room was perfect AND overlooked a large open patio which had a great river view. Throughout our stay every employee encountered was pleasant and many called us by name. The valet service staff went out of their way to be helpful. We were so impressd that I returned again in September with our kids. Also - this is about the best location in the historic district.

We really enjoyed our 3-night stay at this hotel over Martin Luther King Day weekend, despite a few small annoyances.
The best thing about this hotel is it's prime location, right along the river. (Better than all the other Bay Street hotels, in our opinion.) You can literally take an elevator down from the lobby that drops you off on River Street. (less than a block from the candy store where you can get prailine samples). We found our room to be very nicely and newly renovated, clean bathroom, not musty, with a very comfortable bed -- pretty much everything we cared about. Another great thing about this hotel is the hotel's Vu lounge, which has a balcony that looks over the river and River Street. We had our nightly pre-dinner drink there every night, and it was magical (it also happened to be unseasonably warm, which helped.) The Windows Chophouse, the main restaurant in the hotel, also had wonderful views over the river and the suspension bridge, though we found our breakfast there to be overpriced and not very good. The hotel also has a small pool and gym, which seemed adequate.
We only paid $85 + tax a night for the room, since we booked it on Priceline.
Now onto a few small negatives: When we checked in, we asked the woman at the front desk if we could get a river-facing room, and she said that we'd have to pay an extra $75 a night to upgrade -- strict hotel policy that all guests must follow. Thanks to Tripadvisor, I knew that wasn't always the case and argued with her for a bit about it, to no avail. I think the truth was that it was still pretty early in the day when we checked in (noon), and they wanted to see how many people they could get to pay for upgrades, but it did bother me that she wasn't being honest.
We ended up with a room overlooking the hotel lobby, which I found worst of all. The atrium is fine to look at, but it was annoying not being able to look outside in the morning and see whether it was sunny, rainy, cloudy, etc., and made it harder to get out of bed.
Also, it would have been nice at a hotel of that price and caliber to give guests free wireless internet and a more reasonably priced business center. I had to check my work email a few times during our stay and paid 49-cents a minute to use the computers!

We stayed at the Hyatt from Jan 15-17 and the hotel was wonderful. We did not experience one negative thing during our stay. We left our car in front and the bellman brought our bags up to the room for us and checkin was simple! Our room was very nice, it looked just like the website. The bed was very comfortable and our bathroom was very clean. We had a wonderful view of the street below (Bay Street). The hotel was right on the river so we were able to walk up and down River Street to all the restraunts and shops. The hotel was also very close to Lady and Son's Resturant, only maybe a 5 minutes walk. Check out was just as easy. We called and they had the car ready to go. The lady that checked us out was very nice. I believe her name was Patricia, she was GREAT! Wonderful hotel! Would gladly stay again!

First I want to question those that stayed at the hotel recently and said the rooms were disgusting or dirty. I don't think it was this hotel they stayed at. This was a beautiful hotel and the rooms were absolutely spotless. The front desk staff were superb and the rest of the staff were real shiners. We reserved our room through Priceline at a rate of 80.00 per night. We paid the hotel an upgrade fee of 75.00 per night to move to a room on the river. It was well worth it!! The views of the ships going by and the water were fantastic. This hotel also has an elevator that goes straight to River Street.
I do not feel it appropriate for a person to post on this site if they do not take all things into consideration. If you are used to paying 300.00/night for a hotel and you stay in a room for 125.00 per night, it is going to be different.
By the way, I am also a travel agent and I know a good place to stay when I see one. Mark this down as a definite.

We stayed one night at the Hyatt on our way back from a Cumberland Island Trip. Having been to Savannah several times before, I was familiar with the location. That, and the fact that Hotwire had a great price, got me to book the night. It's in a very good location and provides direct elevator access to River Street. If you're planning on spending some time there, then this hotel offers a lot of convenience. The room was average at best and a bit less than I expect from a Hyatt. It was a good size and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom could use an update, though, and the shower backed up water. We enjoyed our stay and, if we could get another good price in the future, would likely stay here.

I went with 3 friends from work last week for an end of holidays getaway to Savannah. We decided to Priceline our trip, and we were pleasantly surprised to get the Hyatt for 2 rooms for only $65 apiece.

I wrote immediately to Hyatt corporate to ask that our reservation be noted that we wanted to be sure to have 2 double/double rooms (I've had a couple of unpleasant surprises in the past at different properties where I've had to share a bed on Priceline bids). They were very fast and courteous in replying and asking for all of my information (including our E.T.A.) so that they could have our rooms and keys ready.

When we arrived at the hotel, we were checked in quickly and cheerfully, and we went up to our rooms, immediately! I was expecting to have to have our luggage held, but they were ready for us. We received a lovely surprise in that our adjoining rooms were on the 4th and looking straight down River Street! The renovated rooms are quite lovely. The new Hyatt Grand Beds are sumptuous, and the new furnishings are subdued and pleasant. I had stayed here a few years ago right before the renovation, and the rooms were a ghastly pink with dreadful beds. Everything was very clean and neat.

I did note the unusual odor that some people have talked about...the thing is, Savannah is old, and everything in and around it has a kind of musty smell no matter what. With the Hyatt right there on the river (literally...it hangs over the river!), the humidity level all around it must be an amazing challenge. None of us found the smell overwhelming or unpleasant...it was just sort of there.

Of particular note in the evening was the bar off the lobby. It has the nicest outdoor balcony that has basically the same view as our rooms, looking right down River Street. It was perfect for a nightcap after dinner and walking around town.

In the morning, our East-facing rooms were glorious; we didn't even realize it was morning, as the drapes are really perfect blackouts. When we opened them, we were greeted with the most beautiful morning sun in the fog view of the river.

Oh, and one extra point...our rooms on the east side of the hotel opened out onto an open hallway overlooking the atrium. Noise was a small bit of a problem, but we discovered that the bolster from the bed made a very good buffer!

All in all, it was an absolutely flawless stay.
