Description: Since the Bean (as it’s known in the neighborhood) opened its doors in 2001, we’ve tried to make decisions that are good for our customers, our community, and our environment. Strangely enough, we also believe that this way of doing business is good for the bottom line. Our fair-trade coffee is organic, as is our produce and most of our staple ingredients. We are committed to using locally grown ingredients as much as possible, don’t fry anything, and make most of our food from scratch. We are vegetarian, and very vegan and gluten-free friendly! In 2008 we got rid of disposable plastic ware and we continue to recycle and compost. We host almost nightly events organized by members of the community and we strive to be welcoming to even the strangest among us. Check out our website for upcoming events.

“The BEST breakfast burrito”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2013

I decided to skip the expensive hotel restaurant breakfast, opting instead to take a walk in Forsyth Park. I came across "the Bean" and for $6.50 had one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever eaten. It had melted cheese, fresh spinach, black beans and (two) scrambled eggs in a whole wheat tortilla with a side of fresh salsa and a squiggle of Siracha sauce on the plate. Splendid!

Great place to have a free trade coffee and watch the folks in Forsyth Park. Nice sandwiches and really good homemade scones. Good place for dogs to start park playdates

“Tree huggers paradise”

Looks like my old college cafe back in the sixties. It's casual and very laid back. No pretenses here. The crowd is mostly young and artsy. The food is very good, both the breakfast and lunch I had there this week were good value. They only take cash, so either use the ATM (charges you for the service) there on bring the folding stuff. Coffee is on par with Savannah, which I think does a far better job than Charleston. Service is always good

“Americano”

I love the vegan menu and the best coffee in Savannah! The staff deliver food to your table and are very hip which is great for this atmosphere. To my delight, they have added wine and beer. I would love it if one day you could use your credit card. The ATM machine charges too much money for a withdrawal. They also have nightly entertainment, so bring your guitar if you are feeling brave.

“Great Vegan Cafe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

Concrete floors, counter staff with a variety of piercings and tattoos and not interested in idolizing the customer as a critical piece of the restaurant puzzle, the food is, however, nicely presented and delicious. In addition to the usual barbecue chili stuffed baked potatoes for vegetarians, options include stuffing spuds with healthy options - spinach and feta. There are breakfast tacos with black beans - or create your own. Wonderful tofu wraps and cabbage soup. The highlight, though they offer gluten free options, was their ciabatta bread toasts, and I was told they bake it there. In spite of some reviews that suggested we go next door to the health food store that had sandwiches to pick up, The Sentient Bean surprised us with a comfortable experience and wonderful meal. Located at one end of Forsythe Park, a wonderful walk.
