“Great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

The location is definitely the best feature of this hotel. It is on the corner of Bay St. and Abercorn. Just across Bay St. are the steps leading down to River Walk. And just across Abercorn is a trolley stop. Around the corner is The Pink House, perhaps Savannah's most famous restaurant. Right next door is a public parking garage-- five dollars a day. (Or you could choose $20/day valet parking.). Abercorn is kind of centrally located in the historic section. You can walk straight up Abercorn to Reynold's Square, Oglethorpe Square, Colonial Park Cemetary, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Lafayette Square and Calhoun Square.

There is a great little bar off the lobby--nice after a day of walking!

The decor is modern and clean. The staff were friendly and helpful.

But there were problems. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived at 5:15pm. When we did get to the room the smell of Clorox was overwhelming. ( I noticed this strong odor in other areas where they were cleaning. It's good to have everything clean and germ free, but the odor was so strong.)
One elevator wasn't working. During our first night our toilet blocked up (maybe the reason it wasn't ready on time?). When my husband called the desk in the morning they brought us a plunger--and left! My husband got the toilet working again. The plunger remained in our bathroom for our 3-day visit. The maid did clean each day. But she never emptied the ice bucket. The bed was very comfortable but the pillows were not.
And the Wi-fi was so slow that we gave up.

Elevators and toilets do break from time to time and the problems weren't awful. So I would give this a medium rating.

Room Tip: A higher floor would have less noise.

I spent two nights here right before the St. Patrick's Day celebration started, leaving on Thursday when the crowd starts pouring into town for the partying. Overall, I'll rate the hotel very good because it was very comfortable and convenient to the historic sites. Checkin and checkout were fast and the staff were all very courteous. They had adequate meeting space for our meetings and the WiFi worked very good in the basement meeting rooms as well as in the guest rooms. The catering staff kept our coffee pots filled and kept us supplied with a variety of snacks, including fruits.
They have a large breakfast area, and the breakfast was about average. The food and coffee was good. Rather than a waffle maker, they have an automatic pancake maker - just push a button and in a couple of minutes two waffles wil drop off the conveyor belt onto your plate. They're OK, but not great. I'd prefer the waffle maker if I had a choice. The cinnamon rolls are pretty good, though.
But, there were some issues while I was there. The worst thing was having only one of the two elevators running most of one day, but the elevator company was there working on the other one. Still, there were folks standing and waiting for the elevator, especially at checkout time for a tour group.
My room was very comfortable, with a comfortable mattress and pillows and a quiet heater/air conditioner. And a nice bathroom with large shower. There's a small refrigerator and microwave that I didn't use. I didn't use the coffee maker either, so I don't know how good or bad the coffee is. Everything in the room worked well except the TV remote. It would change channels and volume, but wouldn't turn the TV off. Probably just needed new batteries. I know that's a little matter, but it's still something the housekeeping staff should fix when they can't turn the TV off after cleaning a room.
If you drive to Savannah or have a rental car, you can self-park in the garage next door, or you can splurge and use the valet service.
I'd consider staying here again in the future. I know the elevator servicing and inspection is not an everyday occurrence, and all hotels have minor issues.

I didn't have high hopes for a HI Express in a historic town, but I was pleased with my stay here. It is a great walking location, which is always one of my criteria. It is very easy to use this as a home base between the water front and the historical district. Also, parking is easy and not too expensive right next to the hotel if people take a drive to one of the islands for the day. The facility itself was very clean and the staff friendly. The rooms had modern touches that HI Express seems to try to offer, however the (small) lobby was traditional enough to fit in with the city. The room is a little on the small side, but it was fine for me as I was alone. The workout facility is adequate, with the bonus being the small pool and patio on the rooftop for a nice view.

Thank you for review. We are happy to see that we were able to exceed your expectations. Our goal is satisfaction and being able go beyond what people see as your typical Holiday Inn Express. It seems we hit that mark with your stay, but I think we can go beyond even that on your next visit to Savannah. We look forward to being the host to your future stays in Savannah, GA.

Stayed 2 nights. Close to Bay Street - walking across the street. They have valet but it does cost $20 a day. Right next door there is parking for $5.00 a day - it's the same lot. They have breakfast for free and its nice. They had eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurts, bagels, toast, pancakes, etc - very nice breakfast. Overall, I would stay there again.

I can't say enough about this hotel. The service was superb, the staff was friendly and accommodating. Alphonse and the front desk girls were wonderful during check-in. James led us to the best places to eat. The breakfast was good. The room clean and comfortable. The hotel is in the perfect location too. Just steps to the river front. We had the perfect stay. We will be sure to return to this hotel.

Visiting my niece--she just started at SCAD. First time in Savannah. Valet was great service, breakfast was bountiful, beds comfy, room/bathroom clean, service excellent. Only two cons--it was 29 degrees, but we were determined to use the roof top hot tub at night. The towels provided were hand towels, so bring big towels from your room if you plan on using the pool/spa. Also, one elevator was broken which caused us to wait a little longer when coming and going. Super friendly staff--valet provided a map and explained the city and gave suggestions for shopping, dining, etc. Ultimately a grand experience. We had a balcony room overlooking Bay St.--you could watch the huge barges coming down the river; so cool! The Riverwalk is only a block away. Highly recommend this property and will stay there again.

Stayed at this hotel for three nights. The hotel location was great to walk and enjoy the Historical District of Savannah. Easy check in-check out. Staff very accommodating. Breakfast was good. Only complaints were the elevators were slow a few times but could have been a problem just during our stay- and the cleaning staff did well with refreshing beds but failed to check ice buckets and coffee pots and leaving towels. Our group was glad we chose this hotel.
