“Good hotel but has some problems”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2008

The hotel is pretty new and in good shape. There were a few problems with our stay though.

First, we had reserved a room with two queen beds; one for my wife and I and one for our 9 year old son. When we checked in they had only a room with a king bed and a rollaway. Our son found the rollaway very uncomfortable so the three of us ended up sleeping in the one king bed. That was pretty bad, so the next day they found us a room with a queen bed and a couch that opened up into a bed. That worked out much better, but it was still not the room we had requested.

Second, on the second day the maid service came by while we were still in the room (late morning) and we asked them to come back later. They never did and so we did not get the room cleaned that day.

Third, as another guest commented, there was no hot water one day.

Fourth, in our initial room, the lock failed and we made three separate trips between our room door and the front desk trying different key cards. Finally the desk person went back to our room with us to verify that the lock did not work (i.e., we could not get into our room). It was finally fixed but we should not have had to ping-pong back between our room and the front desk multiple times to get help.

Despite the negatives above, the hotel itself was very nice and most of the staff were friendly and helpful. They did give us a free night for the problems.

Excellent location - walking distance to everything historic; across the street from the river front. All staff very friendly and genuinally helpful. e.g., they accomodated our early check-in, and cheerfully brought complimentary cold beverages after a report of the vending machine not working. The best continental breakfast - everything from healthy oatmeal , hard-cooked eggs, fruit, and fat free- to whole milk choices, to the more delectable cheese omelets, sausage, bacon, french toast, and pastry choices. The beds were really comfy and had four pillows: two soft and two firm. Nice thick towels, too. Used the fridge for cold drinks; didn't use the microwave but liked having the option. The roof top hot tub and pool (thick towels provided) are musts! After a long day of walking, it really hit the spot. Great roof top views of the river. I didn't use the exercise room, but the machines are top quality. The only down side was a problem with shower water temp. It's a new building structual issue and they are actively working at it. I would still highly recommend the Holiday Inn Express for great staff, ideal location, comfy rooms, and the continental breakfast.
