A couple of weeks ago we were shopping in the nearby antique stores and stopped by the Gryphon Tea Room for lunch. We had had lunch there a few years ago. What a change!
We liked it before, but love it now.

The Tea Room has apparently been taken over by SCAD, the Savannah design school, and it shows. The decor is stunning. We sat in the window section which is furnished like a small living room. Love it!

Only problem...limited bathroom space. A line the whole time we were there!

Oh, and the food was good, too!

Lunch at the tea room, surrounded by the books and the stained glass, is a unique experience and not to be missed. The food was more than worth it, and the croquet monsieur, which I have experienced on three continents, was unique. SCAD students work as staff and are both young and energetic.

I came here twice whilst visiting Savannah, the lunch was great and excellent cappuccinos, the restaurant is very atmospheric, one of the nicest places in savannah to relax and have a good meal. Highly recommend it to visitors, its a jewel.

In the heart of old Savannah is this quaint appearing place. The table cloths are pure white, the decor reminds you of your college library, classy napkin holders and sparking utensils. The piano player is invisible! (You'll have to see for yourself.) The menu is far from quaint, though, as the chef prepares a selection of multiple taste entrees, using all FRESH ingredients. How does a thinly sliced smoked turkey sandwich with brie, arugala, and fresh apple slices on grilled challah bread sound? Right. And the best part: the place features great kids from SCAD, working hard to please the clientele.

A girlfriend and I walked to this tea room from the Mansion on Forysthe for a late lunch on a Friday. The atmosphere is library like with some character and a piano that was turned on to play automatically.
The waiters / waitresses are all students at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) - which we both thought was neat.
We decided to order two entrees and share them both so we could try more things from the menu. One entree was the turkey with brie and apples toasted and served with pasta salad - it was great and a lot of food. The second entree was the chicken salad with orange congeled salad and cheese straws. The chicken salad had no flavor & a fair amount of mayo - so it was disappointing. The orange salad was okay - but again not something we would order again. The cheese straws were to die for - I could have taken a whole bag of them home.
The service was attentive and fun and when the checks are presented they bring two small cookies which were also very good.
Maybe the chicken salad / orange salad combos were just a bad choice on the menu and everything else was good on the menu.
It's worth going for the atmosphere and a snack at least.
