“Not very helpful”

We expected far better advice and service from a visitor center. The ladies, who seemed bothered by our questions, struggled to help us find our hotel which was outside the historic district and therefore of little interest to them. They sent us to an entirely wrong area outside the city even after we went back to ask someone else again. The obligatory overview of the historical district offered to us was of little value. Free wifi and access to a phone where we could have called our hotel would have made this center so much more helpful.

“Personalized service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2013

This was the best visitor's center that I have ever been to. Start your stay here! They have excellent advice and maps etc. I was a little lost on where everything was on the map and wasn't sure how to plot out the days so we could keep activities that were in close proximity to one another. I took my list and he marked them all on the map for me! Very friendly as well.

Our hotel was right across the street so we decided to come and visit. There is a couple of gift shops inside which was great because I was able to do a little souvenir shopping. There is also a place inside to buy food and drinks and of course information about savannah that you may need.

“Well designed for Visitors”

Our first stop was the visitors center. This made all the difference with our one day visit to Charleston. It is conveniently located, offers inexpensive all day parking (first hour is free). Also free are the trolleys that all stop here. Check out the map of trolley routes to get around, especially on the hot days. Most trolleys run on 20-30 intervals. You can also find city maps, advice and ideas to plan your trip and answer your questions. The line for assistance can be long, but the assistance is excellent. There is also more helpful personnel up the stairs. Outside there are tour companies with all sorts of tours offered. Check out their prices and offerings and then check the tourist booklets for discount coupons. We saved $2 each on one tour. also found inside are interactive displays about the history of the city.

“A great place to start - but don't be surprised if you stay for a while”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2013

The Visitor Center is at the same location as the GA State RR Museum and the Savannah History Museum (see separate reviews for those). Each of those museums and the Whistle Stop Cafe may occupy enough time that you save the rest of Savannah for another day. At the Visitor Center you can get brochures and maps, and information about trolley tours, free DOT shuttles, and other activities. The first hour of parking at the visitor center is free. After that, it is free if you buy a tour ticket. However, if you want to see the RR museum across the street, move your car over to the free parking there. If you are interested in a walking tour there are 2 reasonably priced guides in the gift shop. You can get a discounted parking pass for anywhere in Savannah during the week, but downtown parking is free over the weekend.
