The visitors' center had information on the entire Savannah area. The people at the information desk had maps, recommendations, and advice which I found very helpful. The gift shops were reasonably priced and had a variety of items. I saw that there was a fee for the small museum and the "movie" so I did not opt to see those. It was there that tours departed so it was a busy place. Just like everything, the railroad exhibit also had a few. Seeing the depot was quite interesting as that is the headquarters of the center.

Everyone kept telling us to go to the visitor's center (parking, maps, tours, guides, and recommendations on things to do). We passed by it a couple of times and decided to stop. I am glad we did. We were able to get some guidance on the parking scene (interesting to say the least) and discovered that we would not be able to get a pass for the 4th but we could come back for the 5th.

They also had great maps and guides that told us all about the city and outside the downtown area and that led us to take the short drive to Tybee Island. Great center for directions and feedback.

As a visitor to Savannah for over 30 yrs, I was disappointed to learn that the movie overview of the city that was always complimentary is now a part of the admission cost to the museum that our guest did not have the time to visit. I was looking forward to having these first time visitors learn from the film that has been in use as long as I can remember and is now part of a fee only experience. I guess as Savannah's popularity grows so do the fees.... too bad. We are all teachers that have a keen interest in the history of this city.

We stopped in to buy a parking pass and had to get cash out of the ATM, as the visitor center takes cash only for parking passes and for payment if you park in the visitor center lot. This seems kind of antiquated for a city that sees so many tourists. We did not visit the museum here but the bathrooms are fantastic and the gift shop had many unique items. Parking passes are $7 for 24 hours or $12 for 48 hours and allow you to park in any city lot or garage and some metered spaces. We found them to be well worth it.

Sharon made many calls to find us a hotel room at a price that worked for us. Got us in at the Doubletree and it was a great location. We parked our car and walked everywhere. It is close to the visitors center and the main trolley stop. This amazing lady knocked herself out for us on a very busy weekend. SHE IS A GEM!
