I was struck by how much South Beach reminded me of Cape Cod. Sans the sprawling homes. At loow tide the beach goes on forever. It is also a favorite for Kite Surfers. Catch them on the WE.

Tybee Island is about 15 miles outside of Savannah and is worth the trip if you need a bit of the Atlantic Ocean to round out your trip. The Lighthouse and historic houses on that land where the lightkeepers used to live is not to be missed. 178 steps up to the top is a bit of a work-out but the view once you get up there is wonderful. The houses are all furnished with the same furniture that was there when the lightkeepers used to live there. One of the houses was showing a video of the history of the various Tybee Island lighthouses that have been built over the centuries. There was also an interview with a woman who was child of one of the lightkeepers. She tells of how wonderful it was to grown up there. It was really charming to hear her story. The water in the Atlantic was not pretty the day we were there, as it seemed to be stirred up.

Love tybee, great pier, great warm water and nice surf. However, the parking at $2 an hour is just to much if you spend a day. Be aware that the parking attendants will ticket if you don't have a valid parking pass on your dash. We were just purchasing one and he was almost writing us a ticket that quickly. Machines take credit cards. Beach is clean and nice and water very warm. Nice to walk pier.

We went to Tybee expecting to be rained out, but the clouds parted and we decided to change into our swimsuits - except that there is nowhere to change except in the bathrooms (we used the ones at the Marine Science Center) - not an easy thing to do with 2 kids. Because of the weather, the beach was not crowded at all except for the most brave of souls and surfers. The pier is very large and there were quite a few people taking refuge underneath in the dry sand while some rain came through. There are concessions and restrooms available on the pier as well as a few picnic tables under cover. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from on the South Side as well. I recommend Spanky's for the best food.

We drove down here from Savannah on Mother's Day. Nothing was open. Was afraid to park anywhere. The sign coming into town said it was $2 an hour to park.
