At the Visitor's Center you can catch a shuttle for $6 roundtrip out to Tybee Island to the lighthouse and the south end for more beach, limited shops and cafes. Plan to spend at least 6 hours of your day going, coming and on the island. I would say not enough to do to stay overnigh unless it's truly beach weather in the summer.

We stopped at Tybee Beach for about an hour between kayaking and dinner. Even though it was October, it was very warm, so there were a lot of people there (but not so many as to be overcrowded). We enjoyed sitting on the swings and watching the ocean. We also enjoyed walking on the pier. We saw jellyfish, a stingray, and even a shark (in the far distance)! The only downside was that there wasn't a hose to wash off your feet before you left.

We had a great time spending the day on Tybee Island at the beach! Huge waves, lot's of warm sunshine, even in October! The Pier was great and had concessions, bathrooms, although oddly it said you weren't allowed to change clothes in the bathroom! Where else would you go? I changed in there with no repercussions...lol. Parking did cost but it wasn't too bad if your there for just few hours. Lot's of great little souvenir shops too!

This was our second attempt to enjoy the closest beach to Savannah, GA. First, if you are going to charge for your parking, at least provide a real bathroom. I changed in the mobile trailer in one of the large parking areas where we paid the meter parking. It was hot, there were no hooks for your clothes and very limited access. Second, There are no showers or even a hose to wash off the sand before getting back in your vehicle. Sorry folks. I guess I am spoiled by places like Destin, Fl. Myrtle Beach, SC., Folly Beach, SC and Isle of Palms, SC. They provide bath/shower facilities at most public access and many are at no cost.

Tybee Island beach has a laid back feel. No frills, just laid back. The kids enjoyed frolicking in the water and throwing the football. The adults sat in chairs and allowed the ocean to do its thing.......bring a sense of calmness.
