Owner description: Andrew Low commissioned New York architect John Norris to design and construct his house in 1848. Norris came to Savannah to design the Custom House on Bay Street and remained in Savannah to build many desirable residences with the latest in technology and luxury. The Italianate exterior features intricate cast iron railings and side balconies contrasting with the smooth stuccoed brick walls. The well proportioned rooms are decorated with elaborate plaster cornices and carved woodwork. The delicate balance of exterior restraint and opulent interior resulted in an elegant villa for the family.

Be sure to add a tour of the Andrew Low House to your Savannah visit. The docent was very interesting and the house itself is beautiful.

This 17 year old boy arrived from Scotland with nothing. Within 10 years he had made a fortune from cotton and shipping. He built a huge mansion in Savannah just for occasional use when he visited. The rooms are elegant and Robert E Lee was a good friend and stayed here frequently.

This home was beautifully preserved and our guide not only had alot of knowledge regarding the house, its architecture and furnishings but you could tell she had a great respect for the family who lived there.

This is a beautiful home in excellent condition. Our tour guide explained that this is a preservation home meaning that it was well taken care of over the years and did not need to be restored. Worth a visit.

This was the first of many house tours taken and by far the best. The lady who was our guide knew the story of the house and presented it in a most professional - not canned - manner.
