Owner description: The SCAD Museum of Art was founded in 2002 as part of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. The museum's collection of more than 4,500 pieces includes works of haute couture, drawings, painting, sculpture, photography, prints and more. The SCAD Museum of Art is a teaching museum, serving Savannah College of Art and Design students and as well as members of the community and other visitors. A focal point is the Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies, a multidisciplinary center for the study, understanding and appreciation of African American culture, art and literature. It is complemented by the André Leon Talley Gallery, named for the Vogue contributing editor and SCAD Board of Trustees member. The museum also features a 250-seat theater, a terrace and outdoor projection screen, a conservation studio, a museum café, as well as a 12-foot-long orientation touch table. An 86-foot tall steel and glass lantern welcomes visitors and elegantly redefines the Savannah city skyline.

We recently visited the modern art section of the Smithsonian Art gallery but felt this was bigger, better and full of staff to assist. The building itself is great and as we were staying at the Hampton Inn it was right next door.

It was in transition in two wings of the museum which made for a very small showing, we made it through in about 10 minutes.

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is a private, degree-granting university with locations in Savannah, Atlanta, Hong Kong, and Lacoste, France. Amidst Savannah's Southern Charm is a collection of campus buildings scattered throughout the city. The main campus is at 601 Turner Boulevard, but there are locations 227 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., and a satellite building at 342 Bull Street, at Madison Square in the Historic District. Students’ art and design are displayed, and in the adjacent shop, for sale. Students take time to tell of their inspiration—and aspirations. The clever concepts incorporate myriad materials, texture, traditional paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and pop art. I stumbled into this hideaway, only to learn it was the SCAD campus, but visitors are allowed to browse—much to my delight.

Some reviewers have opined about the cost of the students' art for sale, or worse, their inability to properly interpret meaning. In 2006, Christie's auctioned Andy Warhol's 1962 "Campbell Soup Can" painting for $11.7 million. It was not considered "art" in 1962, but someone placed a considerable value on it. How many undiscovered "Warhol" students are there at SCAD? Vincent Van Gogh never sold a painting, so I guess his contemporaries did not consider his work art. Do you?

I have to admit that we have only been there when they have the free days but it is so upscale and completely different than any other museum in the city. We saw a black dress exhibit from designs of world famous artists. Gorgeous space and very proud that Savannah is home to SCAD.

This is one of the best adaptive reuse buildings that I have ever seen; it is a great use of space using some existing structures and incorporating them with wonderful new construction. The museum has on-going new exhibits and it is always interesting to go. One of my favorite places in Savannah
