Owner description: The Owens-Thomas House is considered by architectural historians to be one of the finest examples of English Regency architecture in America. Inspired by classical antiquity, this style of architecture takes its name from England’s King George IV, who ruled as Prince Regent from 1811 to 1820.The house was designed by the young English architect William Jay, one of the first professionally-trained architects practicing in the United States. The elegant residence was built from 1816 to 1819 for cotton merchant and banker Richard Richardson and his wife Francis Bolton. Mr. Richardson’s brother-in-law was married to Ann Jay, the architect’s sister. Three years after the house’s completion, Richardson suffered financial losses and sold his house, which later came under possession of the Bank of the United States.

“Excellent house tour with excellent tour guides”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

To start off, I've been on a tour of this house three times during three different trips to Savannah. The guides that do tours of this house (ranging from high school to senior citizen age) each are very well informed about the history of the house and it's past inhabitants. About the house, the most noteworthy thing about the Owens-Thomas House is that this was one of the earliest houses to have indoor plumbing in Savannah.
If you are a college student visiting in Savannah for the first time or on a budget, YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST purchase the package deal that includes The Owens-Thomas House, The Telfair Academy, and The Jepson Center (latter two being art museums) which if you show a school ID, you can purchase the package deal at a single charge of $5. You can't get any better a deal on Savannah attraction tickets than that!

“A house advanced for its time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

For those who like to see old historic homes, this is a must-see. We take all of our visitors there as they are interested and we learn something new each time. This house is well worth the time and money to see.
