I'm not going to give a detailed review of Savannah's historic district. There are guidebooks and websites aplenty for that. I would suggest one of the trolley services. Old Savannah tours did us well; cannot say about the others, but I have heard good things about most.
The historic district is a bunch of houses, not themed restaurants and shopping malls. As such, there is a decided lack of public facilities around. We went on a beautiful walk past a dozen of the historic squares. Beautiful, scenic, comfortable...until we needed to pee. Nothing puts a halt to enjoying the view like not being able to find a bathroom within many blocks. Savannah and the tourist companies might want to start listing on their numerous av available maps where you can stop for relief while exploring antebellum architecture and amazing foliage.
