My husband and I visited the historic for a 3 day weekend trip. We walked the district every day and always found new treasures to take in. The squares, the houses, Colonial Cemetery, the cathedral... it's a history buff's dream. Even if history isn't your thing, the all-encompassing beauty would not be lost on you. Must sees in the historic district: Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Colonial Park Cemetery, Owens Thomas house (if you can only tour one house, this is said to be the one), Green-Meldrim house (Sherman's headquarters), 432 Abercorn (if you enjoy the paranormal, this one is a doozy. Read up before you go if you are not attending a tour.) If you are able to walk, do so. It is great exercise and you will learn so much more than sitting on a noisy trolley.
